Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has received US$2.5million grant from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to assist in costs for the Twenty20 World Cup.

The grant will be used in upgrading of facilities at various stadiums that are supposed to host the matches.

The SLC requested the funds at an ICC conference in June.

“We requested the money to make up the shortfall we were expecting for the tournament,” SLC treasurer Nuski Mohamed said.

“The money will pay for new equipment that will be used for the World T20 and beyond.

“The required equipment includes new pitch covers, and supersoppers and rollers, which had been transported in between venues during previous tournaments but cannot be moved from place to place during the World Twenty20 due to the hectic match schedule.

“We want to make each venue self-sufficient.

The ICC has guaranteed revenue of US$2 million to SLC, more than the indebt national body had originally predicted.

“The ICC doesn’t want the ticket prices to be high, that’s why they’ve made this guarantee.

“I don’t think the ticket sales will be $2 million, so we’ve got a good deal,” Mohamed was quoted saying by sportal.co.in.

He added the loan does not have to be paid off until 2015.SLC was in nearly US$70 million debt following the World Cup in 2011, a result of building two new stadiums in Hambatota, Pallekele and renovating the R Premadasa Stadium.
