Australia’s new Test skipper Steven Smith has asked the Australian public to back the team during the re-building process post Ashes 2015, when the team will move forward without the names of Michael Clarke, Chris Rogers and Brad Haddin. As Clarke has been granted time to prepare himself for his 115th and career’s final Test for Australia, Cricket Australia’s selectors led by Rod Marsh held a meeting Friday morning when the news about Smith as the Test skipper and David Warner being his deputy was announced. After a thumping loss in the fourth Test at Trent Bridge inside three days, the visitors will go into the Oval field with an aim of ending the series on high and giving their skipper the deserving farewell. According to a report from Guardian, Smith showed his belief in the Australian supporters as he said, “I know it’s an important role I’m stepping into now and hopefully I can have the backing of all the public back home. It’s really important to have the public behind you and I’m sure they will come out and support us in numbers. I’m really excited about this opportunity and looking forward to everything that lies ahead.
“We could potentially have quite a different side going to Bangladesh for my first Test tour and we have got a few new players in the one-day team. It’s going to be about getting a team delivered and heading in the same direction, with the same goals.” READ: David Warner speaks about his responsibilities as Australia vice-captain
While Chris Rogers is the highest run scorer for the Australians with 437 runs from four games and second overall, Smith is behind him with 365 runs, that includes a half-century and a ton.
