Maharashtra skipper Swapnil Gugale and their star batsman Ankit Bawne registered a record unbeaten 594-run stand against Delhi in the Round 2 of the Ranji Trophy 2016-17 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The duo surpassed the fourth wicket stand of 577 runs between Vijay Hazare and Gul Mohammad in the Ranji Trophy 1946-47. That came for the fourth wicket for Baroda against Holkar. Gugale remained unbeaten for 351 while Bawne was 258 not out. This unbeaten stand of 594 is the highest in Ranji Trophy and is second highest in First-Class cricket. Another 31 runs and they would have surpassed the world record, set by Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, which is of 624, registered in the 2006 Test between Sri Lanka and South Africa.

Maharashtra winning the toss declared the innings at 635 for 2. At the end of second day, Delhi were 21 for no loss, still trailing by 614 runs. Maharashtra were reduced to 41 for 2 before lunch on Day One and post that they did not lose a wicket as Delhi bowlers led by Parvinder Awana toiled for over 165-wicketless overs. Surprisingly, Maharashtra did not go for the record and that will definitely be one of the talking points later.
