Ishan Porel scalped three wickets (3/19) and Wriddhiman Saha scored a quickfire fifty (52 off 31 balls), his second fifty-plus score in the last three innings since his 62-ball 129-run blitz against Arunachal Pradesh earlier this week, as Bengal beat Odisha by eight wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019 in Cuttack on Saturday. (ALSO READ: Uttar Pradesh progress to Super League after washout)

Odisha’s decision of electing to bat backfired as the Manoj Tiwary-led Bengal unit struck at the regular intervals, not allowing Odisha to score big. Bengal’s top and middle-order could not score big as the trio of Ayan Bhattacharjee, Ashok Dinda and Porel shared seven wickets amongst themselves to trouble Odisha.

Shantanu Mishra, Rajesh Dhuper, skipper Anurag Sarangi, Biplab Samantray, Abhishek Raut and Arabind Singh returned with the scores of 8, 10, 20, 2, 18 and 16 respectively. Rajesh Mohanty, who batted at number, was Odisha’s highest run-scorer with 24 runs as Bengal restricted Odisha for 108/9.

Bengal chased down the target in canter, with 8 wickets in hand and 44 balls to spare. While Shreevats Goswami got out early, Saha and Abhimanyu Easwaran scored 73 runs off 51 balls to bring Bengal within touching distance from the victory. Although Saha got out before Bengal hit the winning runs, Easwaran and Ritwik Roy Chowdhury took Bengal home in the Group D Round 7 clash at the Barabati Stadium.

Brief scores: Bengal 111/2 (Wriddhiman Saha 52, Abhimanyu Easwaran 33*; Subham Nayak 1/18) beat Odisha (Rajesh Mohanty 24; Ishan Porel 3/19, Ayan Bhattacharjee 2/13) by eight wickets
