Tamil Nadu registered their second lowest total in Ranji Trophy when they got bundled out for 68 in the first innings of Round 9 match against Punjab in the ongoing edition of Ranji Trophy on Monday. This is however their lowest total against these opponents. Winning the toss, Punjab chose to bat and posted 206 runs before displaying an excellent bowling spell to reduce the hosts to a mere total which is also Tamil Nadu’s lowest score in a Ranji match. The duo of Rajwinder Golu and Harbhajan Singh shared eight wickets between them with the former bagging five of those derailed the batting line-up of the Southern side. Even the likes of Baba Aparajith, Dinesh Karthik, Abhinav Mukund and Baba Indrajith failed to counter the attack from Punjab as none of these even managed a double digit score. Mukund’s side just escaped recording their lowest total in Ranji Trophy by seven runs. Had Punjab’s Golu picked a couple of wickets early, Tamil Nadu might have ended their innings below 61 which is their current total overall in the domestic league.
The elite Bombay side which included Sunil Gavaskar, Ajit Wadekar and many others had bowled out Tamil Nadu for just 61 runs in the 1972-73 season of Ranji Trophy. Bombay had won the toss and chosen to bat before getting all out for 151 with Ashok Mankad top scoring with 38 runs.
In reply to that, the home team was cleaned up for just 80 runs, thereby Bombay earning a first innings lead of 143 runs. They had decided to enforce follow-on where Tamil Nadu lasted just 33.1 overs, and getting bowled out for 61 runs and handing their opponents a victory by 123 runs. The third lowest total of Tamil Nadu goes back to 1949-50 season of Ranji Trophy when Madras was bowled out for 69 against Baroda at Chepauk.
However, the Andhra still holds the tag for the lowest total in a Ranji match. They were bundled out for a mediocre total of 29 against Tamil Nadu in the 1978-79 season of Ranji Trophy. Andhra had won the toss and chosen to field in that match which was played at Forest College Ground, Coimbatore and had ended in two days. Put to bat first, the hosts had declared at 272 for 5 in 63 overs. And in reply to that Bharath Kumar-led bowling attack of Tamil Nadu had cleaned up Andhra’s batting line-up in just 33.3 overs, giving the home team a first innings lead of 243 runs.
