Yet another half-century from Tamim Iqbal helped Chittagong Vikings put up 134 for 6 against Dhaka Dynamites in Match 38 of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2016 at Shere Bangla Stadium in Dhaka. Chittagong Vikings did not get off to the best of starts. They lost the wickets of Chris Gayle, Anamul Haque and Jahurul Islam early and found it difficult to get any sort of momentum their way. Tamim Iqbal, however, showed some resistance and looked for a steady partner at the other end. The Vikings managed to score just 25 in the powerplay overs and at the end of the 10th over they were reduced to 45 for 3. Gayle was the first to be dismissed for just 1. He was frustrated by some accurate bowling from Andre Russell. Bogged down by too many dot balls, he scooped one in the air and Shakib-al-Hasan was underneath that. Ronsford Beaton removed Anamul Haque couple of overs later. Haque top edged a short ball and it went high, but straight into the hands of Kumar Sangakkara behind the wickets. Jahurul too did not too much to help his team’s cause. Dwayne Bravo struck in his very first over and the Chittagong Vikings were struggling at 33 for 3 in just the eighth over of the match. Tamim was going strong at one end and eventually got to his fifty off 54 deliveries. He found a stable partner in Shoaib Malik at the other end and the duo brought up their 50-run stand for the fourth wicket off just 36 deliveries.
Vikings’ run-rate had finally touched run-a-ball at the end of the 14th over. With two set batsmen at the crease a score of about 145 to 150 was always going to be on the cards. Bravo took some beating in the latter stages. He conceded 15 in the 15th over of the innings, taking the Vikings close to 100. Tamim showed good form just like he has done through this tournament. The Vikings brought up their 100 in the next over and were eying a big score. With 7 wickets in hand, they were cutting lose. But, Malik was dismissed off the final ball of the 17th over for a 33-ball 25, bringing an end to a much-needed 86-run stand. Tamim was dismissed off the very next delivery for 74 off 59 deliveries. From 119 for 3, Vikings were now on 119 for 5 in the next two deliveries. The momentum was well and truly with the Dynamites now.
The scoring rate drastically reduced and the back-to-back wickets of Tamim and Malik could have cost the Vikings about 10 runs or so.
Earlier, Dhaka Dynamites had won the toss and elected to bowl first. Dynamites currently lead the BPL 2016 table with 14 points from 10 games. Chittagong Vikings are not far behind in the second position. They have 12 points from 10 games.
Brief scores:
Chittagong Vikings 134 for 6 in 20 overs (Tamim Iqbal 74, Shoaib Malik 33; Ronsford Beaton 2 for 30, Dwayne Bravo 3 for 27) vs Dhaka Dynamites
