With the tournament living up to its standard of a cracker one, TNPL has got the whole nation buzzing. A scenic flood-lit ground, fun loving fans, celebrity commentators, star cricketers as coaches and competitive cricket at the center is what TNPL has been all about since its start. Today Karaikudi Kaalai face a tough challenge of TUTI Patriots as both teams will have to battle out to the best of their capabilities. Kaalai’s have lost all the two matches that they played in the tournament so far, the opener against VB Thiruvallur Veerans which they won by 5 wickets and the second against Chepauk Super Gillies which they lost by a margin of 67 runs.

Subramaniam Badrinath who is the captain for Kaalai’s hasn’t performed well in this series at all. He needs to rethink his strategies as his team is at the bottom of the table. None of their department has been able to click and perform well for the team. They will have to make drastic changes in their game plans as previous defeats should have hampered their spirits by now.

On the other hand, TUTI Patriots won their first their first match which was also the first match of the tournament. Patriots faced off against Chepauk Super Gillies which the Patriots won by 45 runs. Dinesh Karthik , the captain of Patriots played a handsome innings in the first match as a result of which they won it. But Karthik went onto join India Blue for the Duleep Trophy after the series opener and since then Patriots have lacked the necessary element in their team.

Kaushik Gandhi who is the acting captain for Patriots will try to forget his first match as a skipper. Playing against Lyca Kovai Kings in their second match of the tournament were all out on mere 95. Washington Sundar was the only batsman from their team who scored good amount of runs. He made 43 which reflects how bad their performance was.

Their balling department who has an experienced player Lakshmipathy Balaji hasn’t clicked too. So there will be lot of things happening for both teams and they both will want to win it at any cost as their challenge in this TNPL 2016 depends a lot on today’s match.

TNPL has many big names associated with the tournament like MS Dhoni, Ravichandran Ashwin, Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay. Talking about the tournament, Ashwin revealed to Cricbuzz, “We didn’t have cricket from Chennai Super Kings for the last year and we won’t have it for the next year as well. Though TN is a big state, we haven’t tapped into a lot of talents in the districts. This tournament is an excellent opportunity for them to excel.”

“It will be a big opportunity for the youngsters in Tamil Nadu to take up the game. The TNPL will be a good platform for them. The State association has done so much for them. They should now give something back to the game. When they play in the TNPL, they will be encouraging kids in the districts to take to the game. They will be paying back something to cricket,” Dhoni told The Hindu about the league.

“They are very knowledgeable and appreciate good cricket from the visiting team too. I have come back to Chennai after nine months. This is the longest gap for me between visits to Chennai in past several years. Hopefully my next visit to the city will be much quicker,” he said about people of Chennai and his connection to the city.

Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) chairman N Srinivasan said, “This is a big moment for Tamil Nadu cricket. The tournament will take cricket to the distant corners of the State.”

Unlike IPL, where overseas players took part, TNPL opted for no inclusion of outstation players. Former India bowler Laxman Shivaramakrishnan told to The Hindu, “Not having outstation players will not impact TNPL adversely. This will present an opportunity for local talent in the State, particularly from the districts, to showcase their ability before a massive live television audience. The emerging cricketers will learn to handle pressure. Twenty20 is an extremely compressed format. One good over with the bat or one bad over with the ball could alter the course of the match. Players will have to learn to react to the pressure instinctively and instantaneously.”

Amidst all the positive buzz TNPL 2016 has created, three participants have been allegedly approached to fix matches during the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League. In a statement, on Thursday, TNPL said: “On investigation, one was found to be a harmless misinterpretation of words while the other two approaches were made with the intent to fix matches.”

Ravi Sawani, who is in charge of implementing the anti-corruption measures during the tournament, said: “The heartening development is that now the players are so much more aware of the dangers surrounding them and have immediate access to the Anti-Corruption Unit to report attempts to corrupt the game. If players have developed this confidence and are freely reporting approaches, it’s a clear sign that the anti-corruption measures adopted by TNCA are working. Be that as it may, TNCA cannot afford to lower its guard.”

One of the measures the TNPL has taken is have special protocols put in place at the dressing rooms, restricting access and preventing use of all communication devices including data services while the match is being played.
