After restricting India to 318 in the first innings of the first Test, New Zealand batters cam out hard at Kanpur. There were high expectations from Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja but nothing went their way as of now. New Zealand started pretty decently after losing only one wicket of Martin Guptill at the score of 35. Skipper Kane Williamson and opener Tom Latham made a strong statement to the Indian bowlers with some contest between them.

After the fall of first wicket, both the batsmen kept kept drilling and after sometime batting looked quite comfortable for them. There were some crucial moments when Latham played a sweep shot, which went towards KL Rahul, who was standing at short leg and somehow managed to grab it. There was a huge appeal for that but the on-field umpire Richard Kettle Borough preferred forwarding that decision to third umpire — Anil Chaudhary. In the replay, it was clearly evident that the ball touched grill of Rahul’s helmet and as per the rule, if the ball touches any part of helmet then the decision will be given not out and something similar happened here as well.

It took some time for the third umpire to deliver his decision as it would have led to another controversy if that would have been given out. Further, both Williamson and Latham completed their half-centuries and 100-runs stand as well, which was very much applauded by the fans and followers on social media. New Zealand are having a strong hold at the moment and they may surprise by taking a lead.

Here are some reactions from social zone.
