In what was a convincing performance by India, they went on to beat Australia 4-1 in the ODI series. The seven-wicket win in the fifth ODI at Nagpur saw Rohit Sharma slam his 14th ODI hundred. He was rightly awarded the Man of the Match. This also was his sixth century against Australia, he has gone Virat Kohli’s number of five and is the only Indian behind Sachin Tendulkar, who has 9 ODI tons against the yellow brigade. On a personal front, Kohli did not score as many runs as he would have liked to. He started with a duck in Chennai but his resilient 92 at Eden Gardens won him the Man of the Match award. However, Kohli will be mighty pleased with his efforts as captain. Not only India beat Australia 4-1 for the first time in a ODI series but also the Kohli-led India went on to climb to the pinnacle spot in ICC ODI Rankings.
Kohli, already the captain of the No.1 Test side, is on his voyage to be the most successful captain for India. He has now joined the league of successful leaders like Clive Lloyd and Viv Richards. The West Indies duo had won 31 of their first 40 ODIs as captain. Kohli has now led India in 40 ODIs and the side has won 31 games, lost 8 and 1 ended in no result. His success rate as the ODI skipper is almost 80 per cent.
The only captain Kohli trails in terms of most wins after 40 ODIs is Australian great Ricky Ponting, who led one of the finest teams to grace the game in most part of 2000s. Ponting’s Australia won 33 of their first 40 ODIs.
Kohli is tied with Ponting in terms of ODI hundreds. Another hundred will take Kohli’s tally to 31, and he will remain only behind Tendulkar’s 49.
