MS Dhoni became the sixth Indian cricketer after Mohammad Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh to appear in 300 ODIs. On the landmark occasion, an emotional Virat Kohli presented a specially designed bat to the wicketkeeper-batsman. The Indian captain made his debut under Dhoni’s leadership in 2008 and while gifting the bat, told the latter, “You will always be our captain.” Kohli did make the occasion special for his captain by slamming his 29th ODI ton, but Dhoni too played his part with an unbeaten 49 off 42 balls that propelled India’s score to 375. Dhoni now holds the records for most number of ‘not out’ innings in ODIs. India won the match comfortably to go up 4-0 in the five-match series, but it was Kohli’s short speech that stirred everyone’s hearts.

“What do I say. 90 per cent of us started our career under you. It is an honour to give this memento to you. And you will always remain our captain,” said the current Indian captain, drawing a loud applause from his teammates.

Ahead of this series, there were doubts over Dhoni’s future as a ODI cricketer after his not-so successful ICC Champions Trophy and West Indies tour. However, with a series of good knocks, the former captain has assured the selectors that he is still in the run to play the 2019 World Cup for India.
