Former West Indies paceman Joel Garner has recently joined as team’s manager on a three-year contract. Garner, who has earlier served as the interim manager of the team, will take on the responsibilities before the Test series against India starts. The cricketer has served in many roles in the West Indies cricket administration from time to time. Apart from his stint as interim manager during 2009-2010, he was also seen as the director on the board for West Indies Cricket Board. Talking to espncricinfo.com about the new progress, Garner said, “I always answer the call in West Indies cricket. It is always an honour to serve in any capacity in West Indies cricket and I’m pleased to be back with the team as manager to share my knowledge and experience to the team and be an ambassador for West Indies cricket and the region.”

Known as the ‘Big Bird’, Garner represented West Indies in 58 Test matches and 98 One-Day Internationals (ODIs). His wickets in tally to 259 in Tests and 146 in ODIs. He is the only bowler to take more than 100 wickets and average below 20 in ODIs. Garner was also a member of West Indies’ 1979 World Cup winning team.

India are scheduled to play four Test matches in the Caribbean starting from July 21. Led by Virat Kohli, the team has played two warm-up matches with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) President’s XI, both of which ended in draw.
