Ashwani Kumar began his career in the Indian Premier league (IPL) for Mumbai Indians (MI) in their clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). His career began with the best possible outing as he secured the wicket of KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane on his very first ball on debut.

Ashwani was named in the playing XI in place of Satyanarayana Raju, and he proved to be worthy of being given the chance to make the debut as he secured such a massive wicket. This was just the beginning, as the young player went on to secure wickets of Rinku Singh, Andre Russell and Manish Pandey.

This match came out for Ashwani in securing a massive record as it was the first time an Indian bowler had secured 4 wickets in an IPL debut match.
