His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, and Cricket Australia’s National Selection Panel have named a 12-player squad for the Governor-General’s XI Twenty20 match against a touring England side on Wednesday 15 November, at Sydney’s Drummoyne Oval. Australian batter Nicole Bolton will lead the side which features a host of talented young cricketers, including Queenslander Josephine Dooley, 17, and New South Wales leg-spinner Rachel Trenaman who at 15 was also a member of the side that proved too strong for South Africa last summer. The important role cricket plays in the armed services will again be recognised by the selection of Able Seaman Chelsea Veney in the Governor-General’s XI following her nomination by Cricket ADF. Commenting on the squad, National Selector Shawn Flegler said: “It’s really pleasing to be able to give some of Australia’s young talent chance to test themselves against an International side. With an average age of 20, It’s great to see some new faces put their hand up, with only three of these squad members part of last year’s team. Nicole Bolton will bring some fantastic skills and experience to the side and will be looking to lead this young team from the front.” Ashes 2017-18: CA asks fans to help AUS #BeatEngland
Inspired by the traditional Prime Minister’s XI match for Australia’s male cricketers, the Governor-General’s XI fixture returns for the third consecutive summer, with the home side having claimed its first win last year against South Africa with the inaugural match abandoned due to rain. The fixture comes at an exciting time in Australia, with the number one ranked team in the world – the Australian Women’s Cricket Team – just one Test win away from retaining the Commonwealth Bank Women’s Ashes with three T20 Internationals still to be played.
