‘In a couple of Weeks…’: Steve Smith himself gives update on his injured finger after WTC 2025 final

Steve Smith injured his finger when he was fielding at the first slip during the World Test Championship 2025 final against South Africa. Now that the Proteas have won, Smith himself gave an update about his injury.

Australian batter Steve Smith was injured during the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025. The star player believes that he will be fit to play by the time the team begin their three-match Test series against West Indies.

Steve Smith was injured while fielding in the WTC final:
During the WTC 2025 final against South Africa, Steve Smith injured his right hand’s finger in an attempt to catch a ball edged by Temba Bavuma. After Smith’s finger got dislocated, he was sent to a nearby hospital for X-ray.

Steve Smith will be out of action for 8 weeks:
38-year-old Steve Smith was fortunate enough that he escaped surgery. He has a chance to play in the West Indies Test series. “I will be in a splint for eight weeks now and I may be able to play with it in a couple of weeks. It will depend on my functionality and what I am able to do, so it was probably the best result I could have hoped for.” Smith revealed after Australia’s five-wicket loss to the Proteas at Lord’s.

Finger got injured while attempting Temba Bavuma’s catch:
When Steve Smith was fielding at the first slip, he dropped a sitter off Temba Bavuma. The ball came pretty fast towards Smith, and hit his finger. This led to him ultimately leaving the field.

Steve Smith’s finger got dislocated:
I was standing pretty close with the helmet on and as we saw throughout the game a lot of nicks went short of first and second slip. The plan was to stand pretty close and I lost sight of it with the angle that Mitchell Starc was bowling and it kind of went inside Bavuma’s hip and I didn’t quite see it until really late and it kind of dipped on me a little bit late too as well. It was tricky, it didn’t go in my hand very well and fortunately there is no break there and it just split the skin and dislocated it which made me feel pretty ill at that stage,” Smith said.

Steve Smith has previously been injured at the Lord’s:
I have a love/hate relationship with this place now/ I have had some good memories here and some not so good ones as well. Getting hit in the head by Jofra (Archer) in 2019 and now having my digit knocked off out here yesterday as well. But it’s a wonderful place to play cricket and I have enjoyed it here and it was a real good game of cricket again,” Smith stated.
