James Anderson praises Virat Kohli as ‘Greatest batter’ after the great batter’s retirement from Test cricket

Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket on Monday May 12. England's pacer James Anderson reacted to this decision and praised the batting great by calling him one of the greatest batters in the longest format of the game.

England’s fast bowler James Anderson hailed Virat Kohli as one of the greatest batters to have ever played Test cricket after the veteran batter retired from the longest format of the game. Virat Kohli bid his farewell from the red-ball cricket, ending his splendid career with 9230 runs in 123 matches.

Virat Kohli had scored 30 centuries in Test cricket, also scoring 7 double centuries in the format- making him the fourth-most successful Indian batter. The 36-year-old had a great rivalry with James Anderson, as both of them had great moments of rivalry between them.

Great players. There will be a new captain because Sharma has retired. Kohli, one of the greatest Test batters that’s ever been. There are big shoes to fill there, but they’ve got a huge amount of talent in their squad. You just have to watch the IPL. They are bringing players into Test cricket from the IPL now who are just so attacking, aggressive, and fearless,” said Anderson on TalkSport.

Virat Kohli’s decision came soon after Rohit Sharma made a shocking announcement to retire from Test cricket. The pair of Rohit-Kohli retired just a month before India’s tour to England for a five-match series, which is going to mark the beginning of the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

As Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retired, the contention for the captaincy in Test cricket is also high. While Jasprit Bumrah is one of the contender, his trouble with workload needs to be considered. Shubman Gill is currently the top contender.
