On December 28, 1926 Victoria created First-Class cricket history when Victoria scored 1107 against New South Wales (NSW) in a Sheffield Shield match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Batting first, NSW were all out for 221 in 81 overs. Victoria opened their innings with captain Bill Woodful  and Bill Ponsford. The two scored 375 for the opening wicket before Woodful was caught behind by Andrew Ratcliffe off  leg-spinner Tommy Andrews for 133.

Stork Hendry joined Ponsford in the middle and the two added 219 for the second wicket before Hendry was dismissed for exactly 100.

There was, however, no respite for the NSW players. In walked Jack Ryder and pummeled the NSW attack into submission. Ponsford was bowled by Gordan Morgan for 353 with Victoria total on 614, and NSW got two more quick wickets to 657 for five, but Ryder showed no mercy.  With some good support from the bottom half of the Victoria batting, Ryder took the total past the 1000-run mark before he was eighth out for 295 with Victoria’s total on 1043. Victoria were finally all out for 1107. It was only the second time in the history of First-Class cricket that a team crossed the four-figure total. In doing so, Victoria overtook their own earlier record score of 1059 against Tasmania in 1923.
