Cameron Bancroftc Quinton de Kock b Vernon Philander 5 20 1 0 25
5.5
V Philander to Bancroft, OUT! Edged and taken! Philander draws first blood and this is beautiful delivery by the pacer. He comes running in and lands it on a length outside off, it swings away further. Bancroft walks way across, exposing his leg and middle stump in attempt to cover the swing. That however brings his downfall as he tries to defend it but the ball takes a faint outside edge to the keeper who takes it with ease. He appeals and the umpire raises his finger. Cameron walks back cheaply and an early wicket for South Africa, just the start they needed.
David Warnerc AB de Villiers b Vernon Philander 51 79 6 0 64.56
26.6
V Philander to D Warner, OUT! Philander gives South Africa the break through. Just what Faf needed, just what the home side needed! The perfect tonic for the hosts as they head into the lunch break. Excellent by Philander, as he lands it on a length around off, it bounces a touch more and also shapes away a little. Warner pushes at it tentatively and the ball takes the outside edge and goes quickly towards AB de Villiers at second slip who takes a good sharp catch. The 56-run stand is broken and Warner, who was looking really good out there is walking back. The South Africans are elated as they know the importance of the wicket. Meanwhile the umpire calls for LUNCH ON DAY 1!
Usman Khawajac Quinton de Kock b Kagiso Rabada 14 19 3 0 73.68
11.4
K Rabada to Khawaja, OUT! What a catch! Has de Kock made it a habit or what? He is just exceptional with the gloves. Rabada comes running in and lands it on a length around off, it angles away a touch from the batsman who does not account for it. Khawaja tries to keep it out but the ball takes the edge and flies towards first slip. De Kock dives full stretch to his left and takes a one-handed catch. Kagiso strikes in his first over and Khawaja's struggle away from home continues...
Steven Smith (C)c AB de Villiers b Keshav Maharaj 56 114 11 0 49.12
49.4
K Maharaj to S Smith, OUT! Edged and Smith walks off! Stop the press, no hundred for him this time. Massive, massive wicket for South Africa and it has come against the run of play. To be honest, it is not a wicket-taking delivery by any means but Maharaj wouldn't mind it at all. He drops it short and sends it quicker through the air outside off, Smith feels he has a scoring opportunity as he tries to cut it. The ball though takes the outside edge, hits the glove of the keeper and lobs up towards first slip where AB de Villiers does not drop it. Tell you what, Smith was Maharaj's first Test wicket and now he gets him again here. The hosts are extremely delighted as they have broken the backbone of the Australian team. Another stand that was worth 56 comes to an end. Have the Proteas got an opening?
Shaun Marshc AB de Villiers b Keshav Maharaj 40 96 6 0 41.67
58.4
K Maharaj to S Marsh, OUT! An early wicket after the break and Maharaj is breathing fire out there. He has his second and now half the side is back in the hut for Australia. Maharaj bowls a loopy ball outside off, he also gets it to drift away and then it turns back in. Shaun Marsh tries to defend by lunging forward but the ball kisses the outside edge and goes straight into the hands of AB de Villiers at first slip, who takes his third catch. The set Marsh is out 10 short of his half ton and Australia are in deep, deep trouble.
Mitchell Marshc Morne Morkel b Vernon Philander 96 173 13 1 55.49
109.2
Philander to Marsh, OUT! No century for Marsh! But he has done his job. End of a spectacular innings. A length ball, around off, Marsh looks to swing this over mid on who had come in a few paces before this ball. But the bat-face closes a bit early and the ball lobs off the inner half of the bat. The tallest man on the ground - Morne Morkel, leaps in time to take the catch. Despair for Marsh and even more so for Steven Smith in the dressing room. He desperately wanted that kid to get his second consecutive century after his brilliant 101 in the Sydney Ashes Test. Relief for South Africa. They can start thinking about batting now.
Tim Paine (W)c Quinton de Kock b Kagiso Rabada 25 72 3 0 34.72
82.4
K Rabada to Paine, OUT! Edged and the second new ball has done the trick! Kagiso Rabada is seriously pumped up. Hard work yesterday and even today he was right on the money and has got every reason to show his emotions. Comes running in and hurls it on a length, just outside off. Paine pokes at it tentatively but the ball moves away just a bit to take the edge and fly into the safe hands of de Kock behind who accepts it gleefully. The highest stand so far in the innings comes to an end. Can South Africa now restrict Australia under 300?
Pat Cumminsb Keshav Maharaj 3 38 0 0 7.89
92.5
Maharaj to Pat Cummins, OUT! BOWLED! What a superb delivery. That is the role a spinner plays. It is not always the rough which comes to his aid. Many times, when nothing much is going for your side, you can come in and pick up wickets by using your guile. That is exactly what Maharaj has done here. Maharaj tosses this one up generously on middle and slows down the pace as well, around 82 kph. Cummins looks to cover the line, thinking it will spin away, but it doesn't. Because Cummins has covered the line to meet the ball around off, he has left a massive gap between bat and pad. The ball does not spin, goes straight on and threads that gap between bat and pad. Timber. The highest scorer for Australia in the warm-up game prior to this one has departed cheaply. Did he play against his natural game? Or was he forced to? Should he have played a few shots? Either ways, superb bowling from South Africa. Create the pressure, then get the rewards without costing too many runs.
Mitchell Starcb Keshav Maharaj 35 25 4 2 140
101.4
K Maharaj to M Starc, OUT! A wicket at the stroke of lunch again! Yesterday, it was David Warner. Today, it is Mitchell Starc. Both southpaws. But a much-needed breakthrough for the Proteas. Starc was taking this game away from them and his wicket was badly needed. Full and outside off, Starc lunges to defend but the ball spins in. Mitchell has the line covered but while he stretches to defend, his bat hits his pads, hence does not meet the ball. Off it goes, right on to hit the sticks, bringing Maharaj on the verge of another 5-wicket haul. LUNCH ON DAY 2!
Nathan Lyonc Theunis de Bruyn b Keshav Maharaj 12 24 2 0 50
110.4
K Maharaj to Lyon, OUT! Fourth Test 5-wicket haul for Maharaj! He has deserved this. Looks up at the heavens and thanks his stars. Lyon telegraphs his intentions to go down the ground and Maharaj smartly tosses this wide outside off. Lyon looks to go inside out but only skews this up high in the air. Theunis de Bruyn gets underneath it at cover and takes the catch. AUSTRALIA FINISH ON 351!

7.2
Lyon to Elgar, OUT! It has taken just two balls for Lyon to make an impact! He has pulled out a stunning return catch. Does anyone remember him dismissing Moeen Ali in the Ashes? If you do, this is something similar to that. He tosses it up around middle and leg, it dips in as Elgar looks to flick it across the line but gets a leading edge back towards the direction of the bowler. Lyon dives full stretch to his right and grabs it beautifully to draw first blood. Australia needed this wicket after a quick start from the hosts.
Aiden Markramc Cameron Bancroft b Pat Cummins 32 59 6 0 54.24
18.5
Pat Cummins to Markram, OUT! Effort ball and Cummins gets the reward! Just now Michael Holding on air was discussing as to it will require something really special on the part of the bowler if he wants to bring the short leg fielder into the picture on this sluggish track. Here is an example! Pat hits the deck hard, not for the first time though. But this is the one that brings him the rewards. He gets the extra bounce and puts Aiden Markram into a tangle. The batsman hops and tries to fend it away but all he manages is to pop it out to Cameron Bancroft who accepts another catch at short leg. TEA, DAY 2!
Hashim Amlac Cameron Bancroft b Nathan Lyon 0 3 0 0 0
7.5
N Lyon to H Amla, OUT! Amla can't redeem himself! Hashim comes and walks away without even opening his account. Australia are all over South Africa. Too early to say? Maybe! Lyon drops it on a good length area, it spins back in with a bit of extra bounce. Amla goes back to clip but it catches the inside edge, hits the pads and Cameron Bancroft at short leg takes an alert catch. The leading Test wicket-taker in 2017, making a statement again. South Africa in some early trouble.
AB de Villiersnot out 71 127 11 0 55.91
Faf du Plessis (C)c Tim Paine b Mitchell Starc 15 22 1 1 68.18
27.2
M Starc to Plessis, OUT! The bowling change has done the trick for Australia! Starc has his one hand up and is off for a celebratory run. Goes wide of the crease from around the wicket, angles it in outside off, makes Faf du Plessis take some more feel. The South African skipper falls in the trap as the ball tails away ever so slightly to take the feather and settle into the mitts of Tim Paine who takes a good low catch. Big wicket, sorry if you are a Protea fan, this innings could be wrapped up today itself.
Theunis de Bruync Tim Paine b Mitchell Starc 6 15 1 0 40
33.1
M Starc to de Bruyn, OUT! Nicked and taken! Splendid bowling from Starc in this extended spell. He goes wider of the crease to create the angle that he wants. Drifts it in and then gets it to jag away. Bruyn looks to drive it through the line but the away movement gets the better of him. An edge is induced and Paine behind the stumps dives forward to grab a lovely low catch. Half the home side back in the hut and it trails by 7 short of 250 runs.
Quinton de Kock (W)b Nathan Lyon 20 33 4 0 60.61
45.1
Lyon to de Kock, OUT! The GOAT roars! Don't look into too much about me challenging nature. Lyon is not actually a goat but has been nicknamed G.O.A.T - Greatest of all time - at least amongst Aussie spinners. And he has relieved some of the tension on Steven Smith's face by breaking this dangerous stand. The last few overs have been very frugal by Australia - just 5 in the last 4 - and the pressure building has told. Lyon keeps it in line of the stumps and de Kock looks to angle it down to third man. It is a big error in judgement. He thinks the ball will turn away but this is the slider. Goes straight on. Past the bat and onto the stumps. Remember that leading edge from AB? We had written - another day, another batsman would have got. Well, we need not have to wait for another day, only AB could have survived after this misjudgement. A fantastic innings cut short. Amazing how dot balls induce pressure in Test cricket these days. SOUTH AFRICA STILL TRAIL BY 201 RUNS.
Vernon Philanderc Tim Paine b Mitchell Starc 8 19 1 0 42.11
49.3
M Starc to Philander, OUT! Caught behind! The swing king does it again! For the second time today, Starc has struck in the first over of his spell. The only time he missed was the first spell of the innings. What a delivery. He comes around the wicket, that too, from a wide angle. Lands it around off and Philander looks to flick. But the ball reverses away, takes the leading edge and Tim Paine takes a dolly behind. Certainly don't remember a batsman getting dismissed caught behind off a leading edge. The game certainly teaches us something new everyday. SOUTH AFRICA TRAIL BY 193.
Keshav Maharajb Josh Hazlewood 0 5 0 0 0
50.3
Hazlewood to K Maharaj, OUT! Timberrrrr! Hazlewood gets his first. And he gets it in some style. He lands it outside off, Maharaj looks to cover the line but he is beaten by pace. 141 clicks that ball. Add reverse swing. Total equals zero probability of playing it. The stumps are a mess. Australia looking at a sizeable lead now.
Kagiso Rabadalbw b Mitchell Starc 3 5 0 0 60
51.2
M Starc to Rabada, OUT! It looked stone dead to the naked eye and it is completely dead according to the Hawk Eye. Plumb LBW. Full and outside off, reversing in a long way, Rabada misses his flick, is beaten by pace completely and hit on the pads. Starc appeals and up goes umpire Dharmasena's finger. Rabada takes the review but it is a futile one. Hawk Eye shows it to be crashing into leg stump.
Morne Morkelb Mitchell Starc 0 2 0 0 0
51.4
M Starc to M Morkel, OUT! Michelle for Mitchell!!! Boy, he has wrapped this innings up in a jiffy. Very rarely do you see an Aussie bowler get a fifer these days given the quality of the entire unit. The four main bowlers usually share wickets equally but when Starc is on song, very few dance well. Another instance of reverse, tailing in late from outside off, Morkel looks to defend but misses it completely. The ball hits his back pad and shatters the off stump. AUSTRALIA GET A LEAD OF 189!

K Maharaj to Bancroft, OUT! Stumped! Cameron Bancroft's fruitful innings comes to an end! Beautiful bowling again from Maharaj! He sees Bancroft giving the charge and smartly drags his length short and serves it wider outside off. Cameron tries to reach to the pitch of the ball to defend but the ball spins past the outside edge and de Kock behind the stumps takes the bails off calmly. A wicket just when the lunch is approaching.
David Warnerc sub b Kagiso Rabada 28 35 4 0 80
13.1
K Rabada to Warner, OUT! South Africa get a breakthrough! Warner stands there in dismay and slowly trudges off. Rabada comes from around the wicket and drops it on a shorter length on middle at 148 kph. Warner stays back and looks to take him on with a pull shot. Is a bit cramped for room and as a result drags it off the inner half towards short mid on where the substitute fielder, Willem Mulder takes a simple catch. Some rejoice for the hosts but Australia ahead by 245 runs.
Usman Khawajac Quinton de Kock b Keshav Maharaj 6 12 1 0 50
18.1
K Maharaj to Khawaja, OUT! Off the gloves, yes! Usman Khawaja has to walk back. More rejoice for South Africa and it's Maharaj who gets his sixth of the game. He tosses it up outside off, Khawaja out of nowhere attempts for the reverse sweep. Misses and it seemed to be lobbed off the gloves straight up and de Kock takes a dolly. South Africa keep appealing but umpire S Ravi stays unmoved. Faf du Plessis after a while, opts for the DRS. First replay is enough to detect that it has hit the glove. The on-field call is overturned and finally a successful review for the hosts in this game. Australia effectively are 260 for 2!
Steven Smith (C)lbw b Dean Elgar 38 81 3 0 46.91
41.4
D Elgar to Smith, OUT! It's pitching in line and hitting the stumps! In the previous innings, Smith missed out on a ton this time he misses out on a fifty. How rare a sight that is? Cunning bowling change from Faf du Plessis, says Mike Haysam on air. Elgar is all over the moon at the moment as he has netted the big, big fish. He keeps it full on the stumps, Smith gets across to swipe it across the line but misses to get hit on the pads. They keep appealing and umpire Dharmasena raises his finger after a thought. Smith is a bit surprised before taking the DRS. Replays roll in. Ball Tracker shows that it has pitched in line and would have crashed into the stumps. Some relief on the faces of the hosts' players. Australia lead by 335 runs!
Shaun Marshc AB de Villiers b Morne Morkel 33 99 5 0 33.33
61.4
M Morkel to S Marsh, OUT! Edged and taken! Reverse swing has its victim. Finally Morkel has a wicket in this Test. He pitches this on a length around middle and leg and Marsh has to play. He then gets squared up as the ball moves away, takes the outside edge and goes straight into the safe hands of AB de Villiers at second slip. He does not drop many. Marsh departs after playing one short of a century in terms of balls. Was run-scoring difficult? Or did South Africa make run-scoring difficult? Only time will tell. AUSTRALIA ARE EFFECTIVELY 374/7.
Mitchell Marshc Hashim Amla b Kagiso Rabada 6 12 1 0 50
47.1
K Rabada to Marsh, OUT! Edged and gobbled by Amla at first slip! Well, it's a milestone for Hashim as well - 100 Test catches for him! Once again Kagiso Rabada delivers for his side. He lands it on a back of a length outside off, just a bit of away movement but Mitchell Marsh on seeing the length decides to punch it through the line. Gets an outside edge and it flies into the safe hands of Amla. 245 reads the Australia lead now.
Tim Paine (W)c AB de Villiers b Keshav Maharaj 14 29 1 0 48.28
54.5
K Maharaj to Tim Paine, OUT! It's a clean taken from de Villiers! Maharaj loops it up around off, Paine comes forward to defend but the ball turns away a touch, takes the outside edge. AB at first slip crouches low, juggles but then does well to take the catch. South Africa start to celebrate but the umpire wants to be sure so he sends it upstairs. The soft signal is out and the final decision stays the same. TEA ON DAY 3, 364 IS THE LEAD!
Pat Cumminsb Keshav Maharaj 26 57 1 2 45.61
74.4
K Maharaj to Cummins, OUT! That ends the innings. Outside off, slowing this up, Cummins looks to go through the off side but gets a thick inside edge onto the stumps. 417 IS THE TARGET FOR SOUTH AFRICA.
Mitchell Starcc Dean Elgar b Morne Morkel 7 16 1 0 43.75
67.2
Morkel to Starc, OUT! Fine catch by Dean Elgar and Starc cannot repeat his first innings heroics. Full and outside off, Starc looks to go over the top but the ball hits the toe end of his bat. Hence, he cannot get the elevation and Dean Elgar at cover times his jump to perfection to take the catch. He immediately calls for the physio and rushes to the dressing room. Looks like he has split the webbing on the fingers. AUSTRALIA ARE EFFECTIVELY 392/8.
Nathan Lyonc Hashim Amla b Morne Morkel 2 11 0 0 18.18
71.1
M Morkel to Lyon, OUT! Edged and this time the catch is taken. A wicket immediately after the break. A typical fast bowler's wicket to a tail-ender. Bowl it between full and length, induce a drive, get an outside edge and hope the slip cordon does the rest. Hashim Amla at first slip takes it with ease. 398/9 now.

M Marsh to Markram, OUT! Mitchell Marsh has provided the breakthrough! What a move from Steven Smith. Not to get Marsh back on but to ask Tim Paine to stand up to the stumps. And what a catch, my word. The entire crowd at Kingsmead stands up and applauds. Take a bow. Aiden Markram has arrived. A superstar is born. Nothing special on the ball, on a length outside off, Markram looks to run it down to third man but only ends up guiding it straight into Paine's gloves. It is a big deflection and Paine does really well. Is this a game-changer? End of a magnificent 147-run stand. This is also Aiden Markram's joint highest Test score.
Dean Elgarc Tim Paine b Mitchell Starc 9 20 2 0 45
6.5
M Starc to Elgar, OUT! Extra pace, bounce and then the edge. One down, Starc strikes. Superb bowling. After bowling fuller length deliveries on the previous occasions, Starc bangs this short, just outside off and Elgar feels for it. The ball bounces, shoots off the deck, moves away slightly and takes the outside edge. Simple catch to Tim Paine.
Hashim Amlalbw b Josh Hazlewood 8 19 1 0 42.11
10.5
Hazlewood to Amla, OUT! The decision stays as it is and Josh gets the mighty Hashim again! 6th time in Tests! That looked pretty straight. Amla has this habit of walking across his stumps and Hazlewood has a habit of bowling straight. In that scenario, the batsman cannot afford to miss the ball. Amla misses. Is hit on the pads and Hazlewood appeals. He is on his haunches, yet Dharmasena does not budge. Then, after what seems like a heart-pounding 5 seconds, he raises his finger! Amla walks across to his partner, perhaps he says he is not sure. Amla says it is okay, I shall review it. It is very close. Judgemental call. Umpire Dharmasena's judgement has saved South Africa a review. But not the wicket. Hawk Eye shows it to be clipping the top of middle and leg. Could have been given not out, could have been given out. The bounce on this pitch, well... but that looked out to the naked eye. Two big wickets for Australia in the first hour.
AB de Villiersrun out (David Warner) 0 1 0 0 0
11.6
Lyon to Villiers, OUT! AB DE VILLIERS HAS BEEN RUN OUT FOR A DUCK! Oh dear... what a terrible piece of miscommunication. In Mumbai, certain railway lines do not function on Sundays and public holidays due to a mega block. That is the term that can be used to what has happened here - Mega block in communication. Around off, Markram goes back and works it towards square leg and initially calls for the single. AB de Villiers is quick to respond and comes halfway down the track but now Markram sees David Warner charge to the ball and changes his call. Too late. AB slips a bit and by the time he turns, cannot beat the fiery throw from Warner to Lyon. Easy run out.
Faf du Plessis (C)b Pat Cummins 4 8 1 0 50
16.3
Cummins to du Plessis, OUT! The off stump is gone for a walk! South Africa are 4 down now and staring down a deeeeeeeeep barrel. What a jaffa from Cummins though. He lands this on a length outside off, Faf comes forward to defend but there is a massive gap between bat and pad. The ball goes right through that gap and sends the off stump cartwheeling. THIS IS THE 3RD TIME IN THE LAST 5 INNINGS that Faf has lost his timber.
Theunis de Bruync Tim Paine b Josh Hazlewood 36 84 6 0 42.86
42.1
J Hazlewood to Bruyn, OUT! 87 IS THE NUMBER! Unlucky it is believed to be by Australians but it is just countless how many times has that number come to Australia's aid in sport, especially cricket! Starc trying too hard, Lyon not getting any. Cummins not tried but it is Hazlewood who strikes! He lands this on a good length outside off, could have been left alone but a tentative Theunis decides to play at that, looking to defend. But the ball suddenly bounces sharply, gets big on him, takes the outside edge and Tim Paine does the rest. The 87-run stand has been broken and the Aussies are pumped up again. Second wicket for Hazlewood. Tough luck for de Bruyn, did all the hard work but eventually has been dismissed.
Quinton de Kock (W)lbw b Josh Hazlewood 83 149 11 0 55.7
92.4
J Hazlewood to Kock, OUT! The decision stays it the favour of the Aussies and that's the match in the visitors' favour. Hazlewood lands it on a fuller length from around the wicket. De Kock goes for the slog over the leg side but misses it completely as it hits him on his pads. Instant leg before appeal goes up, the umpire signals out and it looks gone too, but for the sake of it, given it's the last wicket, de Kock reviews. The replays show three reds and AUSTRALIA WIN BY 118 RUNS AND GO 1-0 UP IN THE SERIES! An emphatic victory for them.

He lands it on a length outside off, Philander is forced to play at that but then the ball moves away just a tad. Philander tries to take his bat away but the outside edge is taken instead. Fourth catch for Tim Paine in this innings. Philander walks back looking at the skies. Really, really dark...

M Starc to Maharaj, OUT! Timber! Number 2 for Starc in the space of 4 balls. Unplayable bowling, whether you are top order batsman, middle order batsman or a tailender. Starc to K Rabada, OUT! CLATTER!!! Third wicket in the over and Starc is roaring. Another jaffa. He bowls this full and outside off, Rabada looks to drive but he simply misses.
