Sri Lanka

Niroshan Dickwella (W)c Joe Root b Moeen Ali 95 97 12 0 97.94
25.4
M Ali to N Dickwella, OUT! Dickwella misses out on what would have been a well-deserved ton. No hundred for any Sri Lankan player this year. We saw two coming close, but that's about it. Gets carried away and that gets the better of him. Tossed up ball outside off, Dickwella comes down the wicket and looks to go big over the on side. The ball takes the outside edge of the bat and goes to Root at short third man where he takes the simplest of catches. A well-played innings comes to an end.
Sadeera Samarawickramab Moeen Ali 54 48 8 0 112.5
19.1
M Ali to S Samarawickrama, OUT! Well... he is bowled. Wow. What a turn of events here in Colombo. A bizarre dismissal. Just the luck England needed? They have their breakthrough. A bit quicker just outside off, doesn't turn as much but still comes in. Samarawickrama looks to flick from the crease but it goes past the outside half of his bat. On its way back, it takes the off stump before touching Buttler's gloves and deflecting back to the sticks. One of the bails is down but the English skipper isn't too sure. So the umpires have a chat and take it upstairs. Replays confirm the ball met the off pole first which resulted in the bail going off. The partnership of 137 is broken.
Dinesh Chandimal (C)c Jason Roy b Tom Curran 80 73 6 2 109.59
45.3
Tom Curran to D Chandimal, OUT! Chandimal departs! A good knock from the Sri Lankan skipper comes to a close. Tom lands it short and takes the pace off this one. Chandimal looks to heave this over mid-wicket but there's no pace to work with. He's a bit early into the shot and holes out in the deep to Jason Roy who makes no mistake. This is a big breakthrough for England, a timely one and it will surely take away at least 15-20 runs from Sri Lanka's eventual score.
Kusal Mendisc Ben Stokes b Liam Plunkett 56 33 1 6 169.7
38.2
L Plunkett to K Mendis, OUT! GONE! Mendis has been dismissed. Was going for the quick runs and has departed in search of it. A good knock comes to an end. Length ball on the stumps, the batsman looks to slog it over the mid-wicket boundary. Gets a lot of height, not enough distance on it and this time Ben Stokes takes it well as he comes running in from the deep. An excellent stand of 102 is brought to an end by Plunkett. Bowling change does the trick.
Dasun Shanakac Jason Roy b Adil Rashid 18 11 3 0 163.64
41.3
A Rashid to D Shanaka, OUT! Tossed up ball on middle and off, spins away from Shanaka. Dasun looks to slog this over mid-wicket. Knew straightaway he was in trouble when he hit it as he didn't time it well. Roy at cow corner takes a good catch. Adil was brought on to take a wicket and he does so. Will this cause damage to Sri Lanka's scoring rate?
Thisara Pererac Alex Hales b Tom Curran 11 12 0 1 91.67
45.4
Tom Curran to T Perera, OUT! Now Thisara holes out and Tom Curran is on a hat-trick. Wrong wicket at the wrong time, especially after Chandimal's dismissal. Short of a length, Perera stands back and muscles this over mid-wicket. Doesn't get the desired elevation on it and hits it towards Alex Hales at deep mid-wicket, who takes a good catch moving to his left.

Jason Royb Kasun Rajitha 4 6 1 0 66.67

K Rajitha to J Roy, OUT! BOWLED! That is a cracker of an outswinger and Roy is out of here. A lovely yorker, around off, Roy looks to get his bat down to defend but the ball swings away late, beats the outside edge and hits the base of off stump! A wicket in the first over then.
Alex Halesc Kusal Mendis b Dushmantha Chameera 0 2 0 0 0
1.2
D Chameera to A Hales, OUT! Edged and taken! Wow. Both the new-ball bowlers have a wicket in their opening over. Both the openers are dismissed. Horror start for England in their pursuit of a clean sweep. On a length, outside off, Hales is a touch tentative in playing that. It swings late, takes the outside edge and goes between the keeper and first slip. But Kusal Mendis at the latter position keeps his eyes on the ball and takes it cleanly to his left. Another failure for Hales - a duck this time.
Joe Rootc Sadeera Samarawickrama b Dushmantha Chameera 10 16 0 0 62.5
7.2
D Chameera to Joe Root, OUT! The catch is clean and Root has to go too! England are in tatters now. Outside off, on a length, Root punches it aerially and cannot keep it down. The ball is dipping a touch but Sadeera Samarawickrama dives full length forward and takes it, claiming it straightaway. But Root stands his ground. The umpires have a chat and then refer it upstairs. Clean as a whistle, is the catch, as per the replays. With Root gone, the English tree is getting uprooted...
Jos Buttler (C) (W)c Niroshan Dickwella b Dushmantha Chameera 0 2 0 0 0
1.4
D Chameera to Jos Buttler, OUT! And then there were three! Sri Lanka are all over England now. Similar ball to the Hales one, but this time the batsman had to play at it. The outswinger consumes the skipper too. He looks to defend but is beaten by the late movement. Tries to counter it by walking into the shot but no difference. A simple edge to the keeper behind. Two wickets in 4 balls for Chameera who is flying...
Ben Stokesc Thisara Perera b Akila Dananjaya 67 60 12 0 111.67
22.1
A Dananjaya to Ben Stokes, OUT! Stokes' innings ends! It was a brave effort. But it needed too much out of him, that too, on literally one leg. Full and around leg, Ben got down to slog and on first sight, it seemed like he had got the distance. But when the ball did come down, Thisara Perera was calmly waiting under it to take the catch. The Lankans celebrate. Surely they have this in the bag now.
Moeen Alic Dinesh Chandimal b Akila Dananjaya 37 37 5 1 100
18.2
A Dananjaya to M Ali, OUT! In the air... taken! Half the side is back into the hut now. Akila has provided the breakthrough and probably ended the hopes which were building in the English camp. He tosses it up around off, it pitches and then turns away. It was also bowled slightly slower. Ali tries to play it across the line with a slog but is done in by the turn and the pace. The ball takes a top edge and lobs towards covers. Chandimal runs in, dives and takes it. A good catch by the skipper ends the 79-run stand.
Sam Curranc Lakshan Sandakan b Dhananjaya de Silva 2 8 0 0 25
21.1
de Silva to Sam Curran, OUT! A wicket immediately on return! Tossed up outside off, Sam backs away and looks to go inside out but finds Lakshan Sandakan at wide long off! The shot was not bad, just that the placement was not perfect. That will hurt England's score on DLS too...
Adil Rashidb Akila Dananjaya 4 8 0 0 50
24.2
A Dananjaya to A Rashid, OUT! BOWLED! Right through! Akila has his third. Full and just outside off, Rashid looks to defend with a big lunge, but the ball spins in, goes between bat and pad and hits the stumps! The keeper is celebrating more than the bowler who believes that it is routine stuff. England going down quickly...
Liam Plunkettlbw b Akila Dananjaya 5 10 0 0 50
26.1
A Dananjaya to L Plunkett, OUT! LBW! The decision stands as it is! For the first time, we see an umpire rush for shelter as he runs with his left hand in the air, signalling the decision as out. Never looked in doubt, to be honest. Landed outside off, Plunkett looks to play that from the crease but is pretty late. Misses the ball, as it hits his pad. He is adjudged LBW but he reviews it. Replays show that the ball hit the back pad, then the glove and went behind. 9 down, are England as we are almost done with this match but it is pelting down, so the game is halted.
