34.3
C Woakes to Bancroft, OUT! Trapped in front! Cameron Bancroft is walking off, he knows he is a goner! England rejoice! Brilliant delivery from Woakes. Deserved it thoroughly. He was bowling shorter lines to Bancroft and then smartly changes the length to taste success. He comes steaming in and drops it near the good length area. The ball deviates off the pitch, stays a touch low and pings Cameron on the front pad as he looks to defend. They all appeal in jubilation and umpire Dharmasena has no qualms in raising his finger. Bancroft starts to walk back and England finally get a breakthrough. He didn't even bother discussing about the review with his partner. Hawk Eye shows it's pitched in line, impact is in line and would have clipped the top of the stumps. Umpire's call! End of a superb opening stand for Australia.
David Warnerc Jonny Bairstow b James Anderson 103 151 13 1 68.21
47.4
J Anderson to Warner, OUT! The best bowler in the English side strikes! This is what happens when you bowl closer to the stumps. Yes, England have dried down the runs by bowling wide lines but you cannot keep doing that for a lifetime. That is the difference between Broad and Anderson. The former was just testing the patience of the batsmen but Jimmy, boy, he played with their minds. Intelligent bowling from the experienced campaigner and he reaps the dividends. After bowling a couple of back of length deliveries, he goes back to a fullish ball. He hurls it in the channel outside off, angling in initially. But then the ball deviates away just a shade. Warner with minimal foot movement pokes at it and gets a faint nick. Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps takes a regulation catch and throws the ball up in the air. Anderson is confident as well and up goes the umpire's finger. Warner is not too sure and thinks about the review. He walks down the track and has a chat with Khawaja but that conversation takes ages. Eventually, he just about starts to make that signal for a 'T' but the umpire says - 'Sorry mate. You are timed out.' The umpires check for the front foot no ball and importantly for England, it is fine this time. The opener walks back to a warm reception from the crowd after playing a brilliant knock. Perhaps, Khawaja's inability to rotate the strike bogged Warner down. Consider this - In this partnership, David just managed 7 from 39 balls. Ouch. This is also Anderson's 100th Test wicket against Australia, a record to be proud of. Good passage of play for England. Now can they get another wicket before Tea?
Usman Khawajac Jonny Bairstow b Stuart Broad 17 65 2 0 26.15
57.1
S Broad to Khawaja, OUT! Soft dismissal! Khawaja never looked at ease throughout his knock and has finally perished. Broad steams in from around the wicket and bowls it on a good length in the zone of apprehension. The ball is holding its line as Khawaja pokes at it tamely. Ends up getting a feather and Bairstow accepts it gleefully. Bowling in the corridor has worked wonders for the visitors. Is this the opening England needed?
Steven Smith (C)b Tom Curran 76 156 8 0 48.72
96.2
Tom Curran to Smith, OUT! Drags it on! Tom Curran gets the big fish, folks! And his landing is fine this time. Maiden Test wicket for him and he is up and running! What a moment for him. England have got the breakthrough and the bowling change has done the trick. He bowls it short and a bit wide outside off, Smith tries to force it through the off side but the ball bounces a bit more which leads to an inside edge. It then goes on to disturb the stumps. Steven Smith is finally dismissed for the first time in the Boxing Day Test since 2015, that's quite a remarkable feat. Now then, can England create further inroads?
Shaun Marshlbw b Stuart Broad 61 148 8 0 41.22
109.6
S Broad to Marsh, OUT! No inside edge, what a judicious use of the review from England! Broad is over the moon and so are his teammates. He steams in from over the wicket and bowls a length ball on middle and leg. Gets it to seam in after pitching. Marsh puts in a nice stride forward to counter it but misses the line of the ball to get pinged on the front pad. Broad roars in an appeal along with his teammates but umpire S Ravi remains unmoved. He is on the run and tells Joe Root to challenge the decision and the skipper accepts. Time for the replays. The Snicko doesn't spot any nick. Now, the Hawk Eye rolls in. The ball has pitched in line, impact is in line and it is hitting the stumps. 'OUT' flashes the giant screen and the English camp is elated! A good knock from Marsh comes to an end. Yesterday, Stuart had caught Shaun napping on the first ball of his innings. It was reviewed but the hitting was umpire's call. This time the on-field call had to be reversed. One of England's strike bowlers is in the zone. Another vital breakthrough for the visitors. Game on!
Mitchell Marshb Chris Woakes 9 18 1 0 50
100.5
C Woakes to Marsh, OUT! Another one chops it back on! Is this the sign of the pitch being two-paced? Anyway, the bowling change has worked wonders for Root again. He removed Curran and brought Woakes and sees the back of the centurion from the last game. Superb from England! Chris Woakes from over the wicket, hurls it a bit wider outside off and this time the ball doesn't bounce as much as expected. Mitchell Marsh, just like his skipper, tries to go at it with hard hands. An inside edge has been induced as the ball bounces and then hits the top of off stump. Mitchell would be feeling unlucky here, as the ball could have bounced over the stumps but it hasn't. He has to walk back and Australia are in a bit of a tricky situation now.
Tim Paine (W)b James Anderson 24 36 4 0 66.67
112.2
J Anderson to Paine, OUT! England are back in the contest exclaims an excited Bill Lawry on air! Chopped on. This is the third time this has happened this morning. 520th Test wicket for Jimmy. With that, he goes past the legendary Courtney Walsh and becomes the second leading wicket-taker in terms of a pace bowler. This is the beauty of bowling closer to the stumps, you are always in with a chance when the batsman makes a mistake. Shortish delivery around off, Paine stands tall and goes for a full-fledged pull but only manages to get an inside edge which goes onto crash into the stumps. He had mistimed a pull earlier as well and falls trying to attempt it once again. The pair of Anderson and Broad is bringing in the rewards for the Englishmen.
Pat Cumminsc Alastair Cook b Stuart Broad 4 18 0 0 22.22
115.2
S Broad to Pat Cummins, OUT! Yes, it is indeed a clean take from Alastair Cook. 4-fer for Stuart Broad and this is his 397th Test wicket, three short of a commendable landmark. He hurls this one on a drivable length outside off, Cummins goes for a booming drive but gets a fat outside edge. The English ex-skipper at first slip crouches and seems to have taken it just above the ground. However, the umpires decide to have a check regarding the clarity of the catch. The replays roll in and the replays confirm that it has been grabbed nicely. Another one bites the dust.
Jackson Birdlbw b Stuart Broad 4 6 1 0 66.67
113.6
Broad to Bird, OUT! Plumb! Broad is breathing fire, picks up his third wicket. Good length ball around off, angling in appreciably and stays a bit low. Bird is caught in the crease as he tries to keep it out but misses to get pinged on the pads. The Englishmen appeal in unison and up goes the umpire's finger. Bird has a chat with his partner and challenges the decision. There is no inside edge as shown by the Snicko. The Hawk Eye rolls in. The impact is umpire's call and it is going on to crash the stumps.
Josh Hazlewoodnot out 1 12 0 0 8.33
Nathan Lyonlbw b James Anderson 0 10 0 0 0
118.6
J Anderson to Lyon, OUT! Umpire's call and England have done extremely well to restrict Australia under 350. Once again the shiny side of the ball is on the inside. Gets prodigious reverse swing on that as Lyon loses his balance in an attempt to flick it away. Misses it completely to get hit on the pads. The hosts roar in appeal and the umpire obliges. Lyon opts for the DRS. There is no bat involved. It's in line and would have clipped the leg stump. That is it! AUSTRALIA ARE BOWLED OUT FOR 327!

Lyon to Stoneman, OUT! What-a-catch! Nathan Lyon, you beauty! This is a stunning return catch and Shane Warne on air goes - NICE GARRY! He draws first blood and has the crowd right behind him. Nicely floats it up around off, gives it a lot of revs. Stoneman advances down the track to go after it but ends up getting a leading edge to the right of Lyon. Seemed like the ball would go past him, but... No. Lyon shows outstanding reflexes as he leaps just a bit and stretches out his right hand to take a one-handed stunner. Made it look so easy I tell you but it wasn't by any means. I remember, he took a superman-like catch earlier in the series to dismiss Moeen Ali. Is he making it a habit or what? Anyway, England lose their first.
James Vincelbw b Josh Hazlewood 17 37 3 0 45.95
24.1
Hazlewood to Vince, OUT! Got him! Hazlewood is absolutely pumped up. Just the start the hosts wanted after the break. He steams in and bowls a fullish ball around off, reversing in appreciably. Vince is caught in a tangle as he tries to drive it down the ground but seems to have missed it to get pinged on the pads. The Aussies appeal in unison and the umpire raises the dreaded finger. James walks across to his partner, has a chat with him but doesn't challenge the decision. There were two noises on that says Michael Clarke on air. The replays roll in. Yes, the two sounds were of the ball hitting the front pad and then deflecting to the back pad. Oh ho! Hang on. The Hot Spot shows a slight mark. Well, the Snicko confirms that there was certainly a thin edge. Not sure why the right-hander did not pick it up. Australia have the last laugh. Will this wicket make a big difference in the game?
Joe Root (C)c Nathan Lyon b Pat Cummins 61 133 7 0 45.86
68.5
Cummins to Joe Root, OUT! Cummins draws first blood this morning! Big, big breakthrough. The hard work put in by Hazlewood and Bird has been a major reason for the English skipper's downfall. Well-directed short ball around off, Root is not in a good position as the ball gets big on him but he still goes for the pull shot. Is beaten for pace and as a result, he ends up top edging it towards deepish square leg. Lyon who is stationed quite up from the ropes stays cool as a cucumber and pouches it safely. There was a set plan in place and Cummins executed it to perfection. Good captaincy from Smith. Well, Root is absolutely fuming. He throws his gloves near the boundary ropes and has an agonizing look on his face. This is the fourth time in the series that Cummins has got him. Yet again, he fails to convert a start. End of the 138-run stand. England trail by 109 runs. Is this the opening that Australia needed?
Dawid Malanlbw b Josh Hazlewood 14 43 3 0 32.56
80.2
Hazlewood to Malan, OUT! Trapped in front! The new cherry works instantly for Australia and Josh Hazlewood is absolutely delighted! He comes from around the wicket and drops it on a fuller length around off, it nips back in appreciably. Malan stays rooted inside the crease to defend but the inward movement gets the better of him. He gets pinged on the pads and a loud appeal follows to which umpire S Ravi raises his finger. Malan walks across to Cook, thinks about the review but then decides against it. Hang on! Hang on! The replays show that there is a big deviation on that one. My word, even Hot Spot detects an edge. How come Dawid didn't know about this? This is really strange. As a batsman you should know that you have nicked one. Anyway, he has to walk now. England need another 81 to go ahead of Australia for the first time in the series.
Jonny Bairstow (W)c Tim Paine b Nathan Lyon 22 39 3 0 56.41
89.6
N Lyon to Bairstow, OUT! Nathan Lyon at it again! Good bowling, good catch from Paine as well! Australia strike early in the session, just what they wanted. The bowling change does the trick again. Lyon pushes it quicker through the air, bowls it short and it turns back in with extra bounce. Bairstow goes back to cut but the length isn't a good one to play that kind of a shot. Gets a faint tickle and Tim Paine behind the stumps gathers it. Not an easy take, that. Half the English side back in the hut and they are still behind by 48 runs.
Moeen Alic Shaun Marsh b Nathan Lyon 20 14 2 1 142.86
93.1
Lyon to Ali, OUT! Got him! What a catch by Shaun Marsh! Spectacular stuff from him and his mates barge towards him. Steven Smith likes it and lets out a huge roar. Lyon wins the battle again, 6th time in the series he has dismissed Moeen Ali. Third one in the game for him and boy, Australia are on the charge now. He drops it a bit short and serves it around off, Ali rocks back to punch it over cover but Shaun Marsh at short extra cover times his leap to perfection to take a stunning catch over his head. Just brilliant! Moeen Ali was trying to take the offie on and now has to make his way back. England trail by 20 runs!
Chris Woakesc Tim Paine b Pat Cummins 26 62 3 0 41.94
114.5
Pat Cummins to Woakes, OUT! Australia once again strike early after the break! The short ball ploy has worked against Woakes. Smart bowling from Cummins and he reaps the dividends for doing so. He cleverly bowls a slower bouncer around leg stump, Woakes goes for the pull shot but the ball arrives really late after pitching. Ends up getting it off the gloves and the ball lobs towards Tim Paine. He accepts the dolly gleefully. Actually the speed of the delivery was 132.2 kph but Cummins rolled his fingers enough on it to catch the batsman by surprise and got the desired help from the pitch. The 59-run partnership is cut short. Can Australia wrap things up quickly?
Tom Curranc Tim Paine b Josh Hazlewood 4 15 1 0 26.67
119.3
J Hazlewood to Curran, OUT! Yes, there is a nick and the Australians have got their man! Judicious use of the review from them. Probing line from Hazlewood. He bowls a back of a length ball in the corridor of uncertainty, Curran tries to defend it but seems to have got an outside edge. Paine collects it and goes up in an appeal. However, umpire Dharmasena shakes his head. Smith is really confident and takes the DRS immediately. Time for the replays. The Hot Spot shows a slight mark and that is good enough. The decision is reversed and the debutant has to walk back.
Stuart Broadc Usman Khawaja b Pat Cummins 56 63 8 1 88.89
137.5
Pat Cummins to Broad, OUT! Broad is asked to walk off! But this could be really, really debatable! I will explain why! Cummins bowls it short outside off and Broad goes for the upper cut but seems to have mistimed it. The ball goes high up in the air and Usman Khawaja from third man calls for it. He comes sprinting in and then at the very last minute, dives forward to take it inches above the ground. It seems like it is a good catch but hang on, what is Khawaja saying? The players rush across to celebrate with him but his face is that of a boy who has broken his pencil but does not want to admit it. He shakes his head and says that he is not sure whether the catch was taken cleanly or not and requests the umpire to refer it upstairs. The two umpires have a chat and then take it upstairs. The soft signal is OUT from Dharmasena. Oh hang on.... this does not look out though. The replays roll in and it is seen that Khawaja takes the catch but then, the ball pops out on the impact of the left hand with the ground and he falls over. None of the commentators on air are clearly convinced that he is out. Michael Clarke feels it will be given out as the on-field decision is out. Bill Lawry immediately replies that it is clearly bouncing! So why cannot you overturn the decision? From one angle, it seems like the ball has touched the ground but then from the side angle it looks like he has his right arm under it. It takes ages for the decision to come. In fact, Broad is happy with the replays. He had taken his helmet and gloves off but on seeing the replays he is convinced that Khawaja has grassed it. He wears his helmet and gloves back and is ready to bat. Come on, third umpire, please give the decision now, will be wondering Broad. And here comes the decision. Oh dear... he has been given out. Broad is not happy at all. Why would he be? That never looked out! Did the third umpire feel that Usman had taken the catch cleanly? Or was he not sure and preferred not to overrule Dharmasena? Harsha Bhogle's comment once upon a time flash in mind - 'If the fielder himself is unsure, then 99 percent of the times, it would be not out.' Don't think this was one of those 1 percent cases. Anyways, Australia will not complain as they finally manage to get a wicket. End of a cracking 100-run stand!
James Andersonc Cameron Bancroft b Pat Cummins 0 16 0 0 0
144.1
Pat Cummins to Anderson, OUT! Gone first ball! They came and they are going now. Didn't even let me open my eyes! Cummins from around the wicket comes running in and bangs in a short ball on middle and leg, Anderson tries to fend it away but all he manages is to do that straight to Cameron Bancroft at short leg who takes a smart catch. ENGLAND HAVE BEEN BOWLED OUT FOR 491, lead by 164!

C Woakes to Bancroft, OUT! Bowled 'em! Woakes is up and running. Look at the jubilation on his face! Bowls a good length ball around off, in the corridor of uncertainty and gets it to nip in a touch after pitching. Bancroft leans ahead tentatively and tries to defend it but gets an inside edge onto his pads. The ball then goes onto crash into the stumps. He was looking solid as compared to his first innings but fails to make it count. He is the fourth Australian batsman who has dragged it on in this Test.
David Warnerc James Vince b Joe Root 86 227 8 0 37.89
69.2
Joe Root to Warner, OUT! Got him! Joe Root brings himself into the attack and strikes! That's a big wicket. He is all pumped up, the Barmy Army finds its voice again. Ladies and Gentlemen, David Warner has thrown it away. Root stays round the wicket and floats it up around the rough. The ball turns a touch and a puff of dust is seen coming off. Warner gets down on one knee to slog sweep it across the line but ends up miscuing it high up in the air on the off side. Shouts of Catch it from the Englishmen and James Vince from short cover moves swiftly to his right to take it with ease. The Barmy Army goes 'Rooooooooooooooooooot!' What a gift he has given to himself on his birthday. The 107-run frustrating stand comes to an end. Can England capitalize on this?
Usman Khawajac Jonny Bairstow b James Anderson 11 14 1 1 78.57
21.1
J Anderson to Khawaja, OUT! Edged and gone! The strike bowler brings in the reward and England continue to remain on top. Anderson is so good from around the wicket and the angle has worked for him. Bowls it on a good length around off, coming in with the natural angle but after pitching, the ball seams away. Khawaja has no choice but to play at it and an outside edge is induced. Jonny Bairstow moves to his left and takes a regulation catch. Smart thinking from England's premier bowler. The replays show that he was hiding the ball when he was running in and while delivering, the shiny side was on the outside. As a batsman, you don't have any idea which way the ball will move. These small things matter a lot in cricket. Another batsman fails to capitalize on the start. Australia trail by 99 runs and are in a spot of bother.

S Broad to Marsh, OUT! Edged and that's a stunner from Jonny Bairstow! Stuart Broad removes Shaun Marsh and have a look at the joy on the faces of the England players. Sigh! Got to feel for Steven Smith, he can't believe as he stands in disappointment at the other end. Brilliant delivery from Broad, this. He comes from over the wicket, drops it on a length and gets the ball to seam away a touch. Shaun Marsh pokes at it and it is enough to induce an outside edge. Bairstow behind is a bit late to react but does well to hold onto the catch with his outstretched left hand. Amazing reflexes! Shaun is gone! LUNCH ON DAY 5, Australia effectively 14/4!
