After a spirited performance in the first One-Day International (ODI) of the three-match series against South Africa, New Zealand will be keen to win the second game in order to keep the series alive. New Zealand are without players like Brendon McCullum, Ross Taylor, Tim Southee and Trent Boult in absence of whom the younger crop will have to punch above their weight. Tom Latham, who is playing as opener in place of the rested McCullum, has a very different style but can be as effective. He feels, this under-strength Kiwi side do have a chance of levelling the series in the second ODI. READ: New Zealand must persist with Tom Latham in limited-overs cricket
Previewing the second ODI for blackcaps tv, Latham admitted South Africa’s bowlers would prove a big challenge for the Kiwis. “They are world class bowlers and we are certainly going to be tested, the ball might swing early on especially with the two new balls. We have to adapt quickly and hopefully we can get on top of them,” said Latham.
He emphasised on the role of fielding being a key part of this New Zealand side. “We are a really good fielding side and that sets the momentum and I think we did that really well the other day (first ODI), so hopefully that can continue said Latham.
Speaking of his opening partnership with Guptill, Latham expressed his happiness at being able to open with his Test partner. It’s nice to get that Test partnership going, we did it in England and it’s nice to continue in the ODIs, hopefully we can put the team off to a good start.
