Former Australian captain Ponting scored his 41st Test hundred after completing 13000 Test runs in international cricket.

 

Earlier, India had succeeded to uproot the Australian top order as the hosts were reduced to 98 runs for the loss of three wickets.

 

After winning toss, Australians lost opener David Warner early who was dismissed by Zaheer Khan fafter scoring just eight runs while Ed Cowan and Shaun Marsh were dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin.

 

The Ponting-Clarke duo made the Indian bowlers toil for the remaining two sessions during their 251–run partnership.
