Glenn Maxwell is eyeing a spot in the Australian Test side following an impressive outing in the five-match One-Day International (ODI) series against England. The all-rounder, who scored 166 runs in four innings at an average of 41.5 and a strike rate of over 100, made the statement following the conclusion of the series. While he admitted to be viewed as a ‘subcontinent specialist’ by many, he expressed his desire to cement his spot in the Tests, in which he has made only three appearances without many achievements to speak of. Maxwell has been named in the 15-man squad for the upcoming Bangladesh tour, which starts on October 9.
“I’m a bit of a subcontinent specialist at the moment. Hopefully I can turn into a Test specialist, and really stay in that squad. It’s a place where I want to be, and I want to be in all three formats.
“While I hit the ball really well in one-day cricket at the moment, I really want to carry that over to the red-ball stuff,” Maxwell was quoted as saying according to a video uploaded by cricket.com.au on their official YouTube channel.
Maxwell came in handy with the bat and ball, aside from sharp fielding skills, during the England series. The right-arm off-spinner took two crucial wickets in the second game at Lord’s, before his knock of 85 in the fourth match at Headingley helped Australia recover from early jolts to finish on a score of 299 at the end of 50 overs. Australia brought their long tour of England and Ireland to a happy ending with an eight-wicket pummelling of the hosts in the series decider at Manchester, clinching the series 3-2.
