Perth: Duncan Fletcher, the coach of the Indian team, has left for South Africa to attend the funeral of his father-in-law. India are currently in Perth in the midst of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and are due to face the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the WACA on Saturday. Fletcher will be leaving for South Africa soon, although it is unclear so far as to when he would return.
An email from Dr Baba, the media manager of the Indian team, late on Thursday night, stated, “Duncan has left for Cape Town to attend the funeral of his Father-in-law.” Originally from Zimbabwe, Fletcher has moved to Cape Town, where his family has settled. Thus, India will be without their head coach as they commence their Perth leg of the World Cup on Saturday. However, he is expected to be back in Perth before India play West Indies.
In the absence of Fletcher, the other coaches will take charge, by the looks of things. Team Director Ravi Shastri oversees the proceedings. Bharat Arun, the bowling coach, R Sridhar, the fielding coach and Sanjay Bangar will perhaps take a bigger role with Fletcher away. India are carrying a strong support staff with them for the World Cup.
India will now face UAE on Saturday before taking on the West Indies on March 6. They will then head to New Zealand, where they will play Ireland and Zimbabwe. So far, India have played two games at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and have beaten South Africa and Pakistan.
