It was only inevitable; after the rumours of him being named as the new West Indies T20I skipper in place of sacked Darren Sammy started doing the rounds few days back. And late on Monday, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) confirmed the development by announcing Carlos Brathwaite’s name as the new skipper for the Caribbean team in the shortest format. Brathwaite, who rose to prominence after hitting four consecutive sixes to England bowler Ben Stokes in the last over of ICC World T20 2016 final in India and winning the title for his side earlier this year, will take charge from the two-match T20I series against India to played later this month in the United States of America (USA).
It will be a huge challenge for the youngster to fill into the big shoes of Sammy, who led the team to record two World t20 titles and was extremely popular cricketer among the fans. Brathwaite’s appointment marks the beginning of a new era, and Twitterati welcomed this new era with mixed emotions. While some were happy with the development, few others rued the fact that Sammy won’t be playing anymore. Here’s presenting some selected tweets on this development:
Carlos Brathwaite better off trying to become a better player than being burdened with captaincy? Or irrelevant in the #WICB larger game?
