England have recalled Hampshire captain James Vince as cover for the injured Jonny Bairstow in a 14-member squad for the fourth Test versus India at Southampton starting August 30.

Bairstow fractured his left middle finger during England’s 203-run loss to India at Trent Bridge, and his place is uncertain for the fourth Test.

Vince’s latest recall comes amid a very fine run of form in the County Championship, in which he currently averages 56 in Division One with  74 and 147 in Hampshire’s 240-run win over Nottinghamshire on Wednesday.

Vince, 27, was dropped from England’s Test squad for the two matches against Pakistan at the start of the summer, having scored 76 in his final innings of the New Zealand tour. However, that came after a poor Ashes in Australia where he made 242 runs in five Tests with two fifties and an average of 26.88.

Vince’s stop-start Test career has spanned 13 matches from May 2016 to April 2018 without a century. He has crossed 50 thrice, with a best of 83 in Brisbane, and has four times been dismissed between 35 and 42.

England squad for fourth Test vs India: Joe Root (captain), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Alastair Cook, Sam Curran, Keaton Jennings, Ollie Pope, Adil Rashid, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, James Vince
