Aaron Finch and David Warner slammed unbeaten half-centuries to fire Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to a huge total of 184 for one against the Delhi Daredevils (DD) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 match No 12, at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, on Friday. Finch and Warner added 128 runs for the second wicket to defy Delhi’s bowling tactics, as the SRH batsmen found momentum after a sluggish start in the tournament.

Both Finch and Warner started off on a scratchy start but found momentum soon to punish an erratic bowling attack of the Daredevils. Finch smashed eight fours and four sixes to remain unbeaten on 88 off just 53 balls, while Warner looked in terrific touch towards the end to reach 58 not out from 45 balls. Warner hit three sixes and as many fours.

Shikhar Dhawan and Aaron Finch provided Sunrisers Hyderabad a rollicking start as they added 56 runs for the first wicket. Dhawan smashed a quickfire 33 off 22 balls, which was studded with five boundaries and a six. On the other hand, Finch was cautious early on, and opened up only in the fourth over.

Both Dhawan and Finch hit boundaries early on, but the Sunrisers Hyderabad gained momentum only in the fourth over when the latter smashed two boundaries off Delhi pacer Mohammed Shami. Dhawan soon joined his partner when he clobbered 15 runs off Wayne Parnell in the next over.

While the first ball was hit for a boundary through point, the second was hit for a six over the leg. The third ball too was a poor one and Dhawan put it away easily for a boundary. But on the next delivery, Manoj Tiwary spilled a regulation catch at point to give the SRH captain a lifeline. However, Dhawan could not make most of the opportunity as he was dismissed on the second ball of the seventh over, getting caught by Kevin Pietersen off Shahbaz Nadeem.

After Dhawan’s dismissal, David Warner came out to bat. The left-handed Australian batsman immediately found the momentum as he clobbered a six off JP Duminy in the eighth over of the match. Warner and Finch carried the momentum as they added runs for the second wicket to put Sunrisers in complete command.

Finch picked up after a sluggish start to complete his half-century in the 15th over of the match. The right-handed batsman punished Laxmi Ratan Shukla for being erratic with his line and length, as he collected 19 runs in the over. While the second ball of the over was smashed for a six over long-on, the next two balls were hit for boundaries.

Warner, meanwhile, continued to score freely on both the sides of the wicket. There came a moment when between the overs he threw his gloves out of frustration that were wet, due to the extreme heat in the middle. The change of gloves helped Warner connect a few cleanly, as in the 17th over Warner swatted Nadeem for a huge six over the deep square leg.

It was just not the fact that Sunrisers Hyderabad batsmen played well, they were also benefitted by the chances provided by Delhi’s fielders. In the 16th over, Tiwary spilled his second catch of the match to give a lifeline to Warner.

Brief scores:

Sunrisers Hyderabad 184 for 1 in 20 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 33, Aaron Finch 88*, David Warner 58*) vs Delhi Daredevils.
