Former Test champions, Australia showed great spirit and gameplay, as they finished Day 2 on top with a lead of 145 runs against West Indies of the first of the two-match Test series at the Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica. Adam Voges‘s maiden Test hundred and Devendra Bishoo’s six wicket haul were the top highlights of the day. LIVE BLOG: West Indies vs Australia 1st Test, Day 1 at Dominica
The day began on a shaky note for Australia, as they lost three wickets in the session, following their early three-wicket loss on Day 1, and finished at 153 for the loss of six at lunch. While just before the stroke of tea break, it was the final pair of Hazlewood and Voges, who put on an impressive show and contributed a 94-run stand, as Voges scored his maiden Test century on debut and became the third oldest batsman to do so. However, following the tea break, the Australian session hardly lasted for about 14 overs, before Hazlewood was dismissed for 39 by veteran spinner, Marlon Samuels, who bowled him up after a frustrating session since the fall of the ninth wicket, as Australia had earned a healthy lead of 170 runs by then. This led to the start of a fresh innings from West Indies, but again, it turned out to be a shaky one as at the score of 21, it was opener, Shai hope, who fell prey to spearhead, Mitchell Johnson, after being caught by Michael Clarke at first slip for a mere couple. The very next delivery of a fresh over form Mitchell Starc saw his fellow opener, Kraigg Brathwaite being dismissed for mere 15 after being bowled by him, as a couple of new batsmen in the form of Darren Bravo and Shane Dowrich made their way in and batted out the remaining overs to end Day 2, as Australia still lead by 145 runs.
Brief scores:
West Indies 148 & 25 for 2 in 11 overs (Kraigg Brathwaite 15; Mitchell Johnson 1 for 11, Mitchell Starc 1 for 6) trail Australia 318 in 93 overs (Steven Smith 25, Adam Voges 114*; Devendra Bishoo 6 for 75) by 145 runs.
