West Indies are stable in their chase of 179 to win the 23rd match against Australia in the ICC World T20 2014 tournament on Friday. West Indies reached 87 for one after 10 overs. Chris Gayle is batting on 49, accompanied by Lendl Simmons on 16. The West Indies need a further 90 runs to win with nine wickets in hand.

Gayle and Simmons have added 37 runs for the second wicket.

Chris Gayle and Dwayne Smith provided the West Indies a strong start as they have reached 50 for one in five overs. Gayle struck six boundaries and a six and Smith smashed four boundaries to help West Indies go past the 50-run mark in the fifth over itself. However, Mitchell Starc struck on the last ball of the fifth over to send Smith back in the hut after scoring 17 off 19 balls.

Chris Gayle provided the West Indies some momentum early on as he smashed four boundaries off Mitchell Starc in the second over. While the first boundary was hit through the covers, Gayle unleashed himself to hit strokes over the in-field to collect 16 runs from the over. Dwayne Smith joined in soon, as he got two boundaries off Doug Bollinger to get going.

Earlier in the first innings, Glenn Maxwell and Brad Hodge‘s significant contributions helped Australia set a 179-run target against the West Indies.

Electing to bat first, Australia kept losing wickets at regular intervals, but Maxwell and Hodge’s knocks ensured that they reach 178 for eight from 20 overs in the T20 World Cup match.

Australia lost their way after a positive start as they lost three wickets in quick succession. Aaron Finch and David Warner added but quick wickets hurt their chances. Finch was the first one to go as he was cleaned up by Marlon Samuels on the fourth ball of the third over.
