Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has lauded the all-round contribution of the 17-year-old debutant Nayeem Hasan in the team’s 64-run win over West Indies in the first Test in Chittagong.
Hasan started his international career by scoring 26 from the N0 9 spot in a ninth-wicket partnership of 65 with Taijul Islam as Bangladesh moved to 324 in their first innings, and then became the youngest bowler in Test history to claim five wickets in an innings on debut. These vital contributions added to Bangladesh beating West Inside inside seven-and-a-half sessions for their first win over them at home ever.

“He was brilliant in the first innings” said Shakib after the win. “We all know that he has the capability to pick up wickets. It was a team effort, the contribution from Taijul and Nayeem with the bat in the first innings was tremendous. Mominul [Haque] batted brilliantly. Small partnerships like 20-30 runs were vital on this wicket and I think we won those small moments.”

Saturday was also a special personal achievement for Shakib, who became the first Bangladesh bowler to 200 Test wickets and the fastest to the double of 200 wickets and 3000 runs, beating Ian Botham’s mark by one match fewer. Shakib started his team’s march towards victory in a spell of 3-0-5-2 with the new ball, before Taijul sealed victory with 6/33.
“I always feel that whenever I play, I want to contribute to the team in whatever way I can. Few more years to come and many more successes, hopefully,” said Shakib.
The second Test is at Mirpur from November 30.
