Surrey wicketkeeper Ben Foakes will join England’s Test squad in Sri Lanka ahead of their warm-up match versus a Sri Lanka Board President’s XI next week, the ECB confirmed on Thursday.

Foakes has been called into the Test squad as over for Jonny Bairstow, who has an ankle ligament injury, and is expected to land in Colombo this weekend.

Bairstow twisted his right ankle while playing football during training ahead of the fourth ODI on Sunday – which England won to claim the series with a game to spare – and was ruled out of the fifth game and the one-off T20I.

Foakes, 25, was a key member of the Surrey team that won the County Championship this season, scoring 624 runs at 36.70 and holding 37 catches. In 90 career first-class games, Foakes has scored 4552 runs at 40.64 with eight centuries and 24 fifties.

The first of three Tests between England and Sri Lanka starts on November 6.
