After announcing that Ravi Shastri would retain his position as the head coach of the Indian cricket team till the 2021 T20 World Cup in India, the BCCI-appointed Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) chairman (CAC) Kapil Dev insisted that BCCI take into consideration the views of the CAC as well for the selection of the support staff.
“With the announcement now made, the CAC’s role comes to an end,” BCCI CEO Rahul Johri informed Cricket Country.
The MSK Prasad-led selection committee will conduct interviews for the post of batting, bowling and fielding coaches from August 19-22 at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.
According to the Committee of Administrators’ (CoA) letter in July, the CAC’s appointment is specific to picking only the next India coach, but Dev, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain, explained that the CAC’s views can be considered to pick the support staff as well to ensure continuity.
“Yes, our opinion should be taken. there. We will put it across to the Board in our minutes of the meeting. It is not right if we don’t do that job (choosing support staff) as well. We have given a letter to the Board requesting them to take our views,” Dev said at the press conference organised in Mumbai to announce the new head coach.
“There should not be a communication gap. We want to make sure that the team should get benefited and if we can help them and the selection committee, then why not. I’m sure that the Board too will want the same.”
Taking into consideration the views of the CAC, which is now defunct, will go against the Constitution. “It will go against the constitution, but the selection committee can always consult the three members informally,” said a top BCCI official.
