Wayne Parnell’s all-round performance took Barbados Trident to a 16-run victory against Trinbago Knight Riders in Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2017. Batting first, Barbados Trident put up a mere 136, losing 9 wickets. However, the bowlers upped the ante and bundle the opponents with 1.4 overs remaining. With this victory, the Trident are now at No. 5 in the points table, with four victories in nine matches while Knight Riders remain to be on top despite the loss, with victories in eight out of the 10 matches. Winning the toss at Kensington Oval, the Knight Riders sent the Trident to bat first. The bowlers performed exceptionally well, not letting the top order score many runs. Tridents kept on losing wickets at regular intervals, but No. 8, Shamar Springer, kept his team on course. However, Parnell’s contribution was the most important among the batsmen, as he added an unbeaten 44 off 35 that took the team score well past 100. Shadab Khan was the pick of the bowlers for the Knight Riders, bagging 2 wickets with an economy of 3.25.
However, the Knight Riders could not do any better with the bat than their opponents. Parnell bagged two crucial wickets at the top order. Brendon McCullum had a good start to his innings but had to retire hurt. Though skipper Dwayne Bravo (22) and Javon Searles (29) tried their best, they could not save the side from defeat. Apart from Parnell, Wahab Riaz and Kieron Pollard were the other two bowlers who helped majorly to bundle the opposition.
Brief scores:
Barbados Tridents 136 for 9 in 20 overs (Shamar Springer 21, Wayne Parnell 44*; Shadab Khan 2 for 13) won against Trinbago Knight Riders 120 in 18.2 overs (Brendon McCullum 26, Dwayne Bravo 22, Javon Searles 29; Wahab Riaz 2 for 24, Wayne Parnell 3 for 31, Kieron Pollard 2 for 26) by 16 runs.
