South Africa batsman Dean Elgar has replaced injured Hashim Alma in the Proteas’ ODI squad for the upcoming home series against Zimbabwe that begins in Kimberly on Sunday.

According to a media release by Cricket South Africa on Tuesday, Amla sustained a tear to the tendon in his left fifth digit while fielding during the recently-concluded Caribbean Premier League which has ruled him out of the series.

CSA National Selection Panel (NSP) convener Linda Zondi was confident Elgar’s recent form and experience will add value to the top order.

“The Zimbabwe series is an opportunity to further explore our ODI options. The unfortunate injury to Hashim gives us an opportunity to see what Dean is capable of in the limited-overs format. He has always been on our radar having put in consistent performances, both in South Africa and the UK. He brings a wealth of valuable experience to the batting group in Hashim and Faf’s absence,” she said.

South Africa will face Zimbabwe in a three-match ODI series and a three-match T20I series beginning on Sunday.

The CSA also revealed skipper Faf du Plessis, who’s still recuperating from his shoulder injury he picked up during the third ODI against Sri Lanka last month, will not feature in the ODI series. All-rounder JP Duminy will lead the side in Du Plessis’ absence.

“We hope that Faf will be fit enough to lead the T20 side for the three-match series against Zimbabwe,” team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee said.

Meanwhile, left-arm bowler Keshav Maharaj has been released from the ODI squad to fulfill domestic responsibilities.
