Pakistan‘s spinner Hasan Ali bowled a crucial spell, as he finished with a figure of 5 for 38, which allowed the hosts to register a much needed 74-run win over the hosts West Indies, in the second of the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Sunday. Following the win, the series is now levelled at 1-1, therefore setting up the decider between the two sides in the third and final ODI on Tuesday at this very venue. Earlier, West Indies skipper Jason Holder won the toss and invited Pakistan to bat first. The visitors put up a good total of 282 for the loss of just five wickets, courtesy of Babar Azam’s unbeaten 125. As for West Indies, they began the chase on a shaky not. With just 22 runs on the board, opener Chadwick Walton departed for mere 10 to Junaid Khan in the fourth, as his woeful form continued in the second game as well. The very next over, he was followed by his fellow opening partner Evin Lewis, just five runs later, who fell for just 13 to Mohammad Aamer, after being trapped leg-before.
Clearly showing signs of a shaky start, the two new batsmen Shai Hope and Kieran Powell aimed to provide some fightback. Powell, who was in good form in the last tie, was one of the hopes for the West Indies. However, the pair could only contribute 19 runs, and it was at the score of 46, when Hope departed for mere 15 to Hasan Ali in the ninth over. He was soon followed by Powell, who could not continue his good form from the last game, and fell for just 11 to the same man, just couple of overs later. Clearly struggling to make partnerships, West Indies were in desperate search for it, as the new pair of Jonathan Carter and match-winner from 1st ODI, Jason Mohammaed aimed to take the charge. Nevertheless, it was at the score of 56, when Mohammed fell for a mere single to Mohammad Hafeez in the 14th over. It was Carter then, who looked desperate to hang on and get a partnership going along with incoming batsman Holder.
The pair could only contribute 19 runs, before Carter fell for 75 to Hafeez again in the 18th over, after being trapped leg-before. He instantly went up for the review out of desperation. However, the hawk-eye showed three reds, as the decision stayed with the on-field umpire, and Carter had no choice but to walk off.
Nevertheless, just when it seemed that it was almost all over for the West Indies, it was the pair of Holder and Ashley Nurse, who showed some strength, along with some fightback. The pair contributed crucial 58 runs, as Nurse contributed 44, while Holder contributed 13 in the stand. It was followed by some tough bowling by Shadab Khan, who was turning the ball sharp, giving quite a tough time to both the batsmen. However, they held nerves to show resilience.
However, just when it seemed that Nurse might get to his half-century, it was at the score of 133, when he fell for 44 in the 29th over. Out came Devendra Bishoo to support the skipper, but both could manage only 23 runs, as Bishoo fell for just 16 to Shadab in the 34th over. Nevertheless, the skipper carried on his game, as out came Alzarri Joseph to support him at the other end.
Holder continued to play the captain’s knock as he brought up his half-century off 67 deliveries, including four boundaries and a six. However, his partner at the other end could not hold on, as Joseph fell for mere 15 to Hasan Ali in the 45th over, bring an end of the crucial 52-run stand between the two for the ninth wicket. With Joseph being gone, Holder was left with no other choice, but to go for the big shots. And he was dismissed in the same over attempting a big one, therefore allowing Pakistan to register an impressive 74-run win over the hosts, therefore levelling series 1-1, and also setting up the decider in the 3rd ODI on Tuesday.
