England’s ICC World Twenty20 2016 hopes suffered a setback on Friday when fast bowler Steven Finn was ruled out with a strained left calf. The 26-year-old Middlesex quick was down to lead England’s attack at next month’s global tournament in India despite missing the white ball section of the recent tour of South Africa with a side strain. But Finn has suffered a fresh injury blow and his place in England’s 15-man squad will now be taken by Yorkshire fast bowler Liam Plunkett.  “Really disappointed to have picked up another injury on my road to recovery,” Finn said on Twitter. “Gutted doesn’t describe it. Good luck to the guys out there!”  READ: Steven Finn’s hat-trick and related records

England leave for India on March 8 and will face Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies and a qualifier in the group stages of the tournament. The only major International Cricket Council (ICC) limited-overs trophy England have ever won was the 2010 World Twenty20 in the Caribbean. Last week they suffered a nine-wicket thrashing by South Africa as the Proteas took a two-match Twenty20 series 2-0 with a crushing win in Johannesburg.

Finn had been ruled out of the fourth Test against South Africa at Centurion due to a side strain that he developed during the third Test at Johannesburg. Finn also did not feature in the One-Day International (ODI) series that followed the Tests, as the England team did not want to risk him in the limited-overs fixtures as he was among the main bowlers for the team in the ICC World T20 2016 that will take place in March-April in India. But Finn will sadly not ply any part in the mega event.
