This is the first time Bangladesh was hosting a Test match in June at home. There was fear of rains playing spoilsport right from the beginnings of the match. Things started well for India as Virat Kohli had won the toss and elected to bat first. Harbhajan Singh made is comeback to Test cricket after a gap of over two years. Bangladesh had a debutant in Litton Das, who was filling in for Mushfiqur Rahim, who was fit to lead the side and bat but not to keep wickets. On Day One, India were well placed at 239 for no loss with Shikhar Dhawan already having scored a 150 and Murali Vijay 89. But unfortunately they could not continue their dominance as rain came pouring down. The rains did not stop on Day Two as well and as a result the entire day was washed out. Play finally resumed on Day Three and India made the best use of the opportunity of it as Vijay scored a magnificent 150. Dhawan missed out on a double century as he was dismissed for 173. Rainonce again came pouring down with India on 462 for six at the end of Day Three. India then declared on their overnight score and Bangladesh openers Imrul Kayes and Tamim Iqbal came on to bat.

The openers came out with positive intent and were attacking the bowlers very well. Tamim played one shot too many and found himself stumped off the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin for a 21-ball 19. Tamim during the course of his innings went past Habibul Bashar to become Bangladesh’s leading run-getter in Tests. Mominul Haque and Kayes then put up a good partnership of 81, before Harbhajan dismissed Mominul Haque for 30. Kayes was looking rock steady as Bangladesh finished Day Four on 111 for three after one session was completely washed out. With chances of a result in the match very less, Bangladesh came on to the field on Day Five to play out the remaining overs. Shakib-Al-Hasan was the first man to be dismissed on nine. After a decent partnership between Kayes and Soumya Sarkar, Kays went for 72.

Debutant Litton Das was looking in excellent and Bangladesh were getting closer and closer to avoiding the follow-on. He was eventyually dismissed for a 45-ball 44 and with that the tail was also cleaned up soon. Ashwin was the star of the bowling attack as he picked up five wickets, with Harbhajan chipping in with three wickets as well. Harbhajan went past Wasim Akram’s record of414 wickets to become the ninth highest wicket-taker in Tests.

Bangladesh could not avoid the follow-on, but India had too much to do in too little time and as a result the captains from both sides decided to shake hands and as a result the one-off series ended in a draw.  READ: BCCI set to retain team India’s assistant coaches
