England have beaten India by three wickets in the sixth One-Day International (ODI) of the tri-series. They will now go on to face Australia in the finals of the series. In chase of 201, England were at one point staggering at 66/5 before Jos Buttler and James Taylor scored amazingly composed half-centuries, taking England to a victory.
England’s top-order failed miserably. Ian Bell only managed 10 runs and fellow-opener Moeen Ali fared seven run better. Joe Root, Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara put on an even more miserable show scoring less than 10 runs together. India’s bowling was quite spectacular early on, particularly Stuart Binny.
Binny procured generous swing and bowled with accuracy to pick three wickets putting England on the mat. Mohit Sharma bowled quite well and was rewarded with the wicket of Bell, whereas Akshar Patel got the lone wicket of Ali who tried to attack him.
But when Buttler came out and showed some fight, the Indian bowling lost its bite. They were unable to pick wickets and the partnership eventually swelled to more than a hundred runs. For reasons yet to be known, MS Dhoni didn’t give Binny another over even though he ran through the middle order in his eight overs.
Buttler played relatively freely right from the time he came out but Taylor was more cautious early on. But as he got England closer to victory he started playing brave shots. He ultimately got out for an extremely crucial 82. Buttler later fell for 67 with less than 10 runs to win the match, but Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes navigated through some anxious moments to seal the match.
Earlier India’s effort with the bat was quite the antithesis of England’s effort wherein the openers played amazingly taking India to 83 for no loss. But after that lost nine wicket for 117 runs. Ajinkya Rahane scored a 73, while Shikhar Dhawan scored 38. Mohammad Shami, with 25 was the only other batsman to cross the 20-run mark.
Steven Finn once again excelled with the ball picking three wickets, including that of Rahane. He was well supported by all other bowlers as Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali all contributed with two wickets each.
