After being knocked out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017, Gujarat Lions (GL) had nothing but pride to play for in Match No. 47 against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). KXIP, who are still in contention of making it to the IPL 10 playoffs, were handed their sixth defeat this season and are currently placed at No. 5 in the IPL 2017 points table. KXIP, thanks to a Hashim Amla special reached 189 for in their allotted 20 overs, wherein he ended up scoring 104 runs. GL ,who so far were having a hot and cold batting display this season, finally came to their own, all thanks to a blitz by Dwayne Smith. Smith, who came out to open the innings after Brendon McCullum was ruled out, struck a belligerent 74 off 39. Smith along with Ishan Kishan had an opening stand of 91 runs where the latter contributed with just 29 runs. In the post match presentation, Smith spoke about his stand with Kishan saying, “Just be positive, he [Ishan Kishan] has been scoring heavily over the last few games. We had a good partnership. Speaking about his own batting Smith said that he was disappointed with his earlier outings. “Still disappointed over my performance over the past few games. My natural game is like that,” Smith explained. While signing off Smith did mention that GL will look to spoil other teams’ party who could potentially be in the IPL 10 playoffs. “We just need to keep going on from here and look to damage some other teams from here on,” Smith concluded.
