IPL 2018 windows for player retention closed on Thursday, January 4. The franchises were eligible to retain five players each with combinations of player retention and right-to-match during the auction. This season will mark the return of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). As expected, CSK retained MS Dhoni, who is likely to captain the side for the ninth time. Suresh Raina, who had led Gujarat Lions (GL) twice, will return to CSK as well, as will Ravindra Jadeja. The side have surprisingly let go of Ravichandran Ashwin. RR are have retained Steven Smith, who is expected to lead the side as well. They had the option to retain Ajinkya Rahane but did not opt for that.
As expected, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) retained their captain Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. In other news, Kohli and de Villiers will face each other for their respective nations in the India-South Africa Test series beginning Friday. Other retained heavyweights include Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians) and Sunil Narine (Kolkata Knight Riders). Here is the full IPL retention list:
