A massive 80-run win over Delhi Capitals on Wednesday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium has put Chennai Super Kings back at the top of the IPL 2019 points table.

Thus, Delhi lost the No 1 spot and slipped to second with their fifth loss in 13 matches.

Six league matches remain before the IPL playoffs start, and five teams are chasing two spots in the final four.

This is how the IPL points table stands as of May 1:

IPL 2019 points table latest update today match

Let’s look at the IPL 2019 playoff scenario:

MUMBAI INDIANS

Points: 14 NRR: 0.347 Matches left: Two (vs SRH at home & KKR at home)

If Rohit Sharma’s team can win one of their remaining two home matches, they will stay in the top four and progress to the playoffs. Even if they lose both of their games, Mumbai Indians could qualify on net run-rate (NRR) if it remains higher than Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab.

SUNRISERS HYDERABAD

Points: 12 NRR: +0.709 Matches left: Two (vs MI away & RCB away)

Without David Warner for the first time this season, Sunrisers will hope to seal their place in the playoffs against MI today. They are placed at fourth spot on the IPL table with 12 points, just below MI who have 14 points.

If SRH win their next two matches it would give them 16 points. Should SRH lose one of their remaining games, a very healthy NRR should be enough to take them forward to the playoffs with 14 points.

RAJASTHAN ROYALS

Points: 11 NRR: -0.321 Matches left: One (vs DC away)

Despite having a lower NRR than KXIP, Rajasthan could still end up ahead of them on the points table if they beat Delhi Capitals. This would give them 13 points. On top of this, KKR would need KKR and KXIP to lose their remaining games. If they lose to DC, Rajasthan are out of the IPL.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS

Points: 10 NRR: +0.10 Matches left: Two (vs KXIP away & MI away)

Dinesh Karthik’s team must beat KXIP in Mohali to avoid falling one place lower. The best that KKR can finish with is 14 points and even that does not guarantee them a place in the playoffs. KKR also have a poorer NRR than SRH and MI, which does not help their playoff chances.

KINGS XI PUNJAB

Points: 10 NRR: -0.296 Matches left: Two (vs KKR at home & CSK at home)

The R Ashwin-led franchise has to win both remaining fixtures to achieve 14 points, as well as boost their poor NRR. For KXIP to go further, SRH will have to lose their last two games and RR will need to lose to Delhi. If this happens, no team with 12 or less points can make it to the IPL 2019 playoffs.
