The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 final will be played today at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore, as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) take on each other in the title clash. This match will be followed by millions across India, but which is the favoured team? Going by the Facebook’s IPL Fandom maps, Kolkata would garner more support.
If you have a look at the maps released by Facebook on the IPL fans in India PAGE OR GROUP, one would realize that Kolkata has more support when compared to Kings XI Punjab. Kolkata have a majority of their support in West Bengal, with other littered through North India. They also have a fan base in Kerala down south.
As expected, Punjab’s fan base is mainly centered in their home state. But surprisingly, there is some support for them in Kerala as well. So, one can expect the state of Kerala to watch this contest with keep interest.
When one goes through the other maps released, one would notice that Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have had their fair share of support. Mumbai has support from almost all over the country, majorly in Maharashtra of course. Perhaps, it is the Sachin Tendulkar effect is still working and that is what is attracting the fans to Mumbai, although they did not have a very good season.
And, when it comes to Chennai, one can feel the Mahendra Singh Dhoni effect. Dhoni is easily one of the most popular cricketer in the country. They have support in Tamil Nadu and eastern parts of India such as Bihar and Jharkhand. Dhoni hails from Jharkhand and Chennai played their home matches in Ranchi, so that would have worked for Chennai. Royal Challengers Bangalore command a good following in Karnataka and in other parts of the country. Surprisingly, Rajasthan Royals don’t have a huge following according to the Facebook Fandom map, even though their style of play is quite popular.
