Steven Finn to bowl the last over. Thirimanne gets a single off the first ball. There are two dots after that as Mathews fails to get it through. In fact, there is a run-out appeal, but he has made it. And finally it is done! Mathews plays it through mid-wicket and it is a four. Mathews gets fifty and Sri Lanka have won by six wickets. It finished later than they would have expected.

Thirimanne makes room and smashes it through mid-off for a four. That was a good shot there by Thirimanne. He then plays it to the leg-side for a single. Mathews then gets a couple. Thirimanne plays one uppishly through the off-side and it falls in no-man’s land. Mathews gets a couple.
Mathews makes room and blazes through cover for a four. Chris Jordan did get excited earlier in the over when he hit Thirimanne on the pads, but it was going down leg.
Mathews makes room and carts it through the off-side for a four. He takes a single later in the over. They need 19 off 18 balls.
Dropped! Mathews tries to go over the top, and the edge flies to third-man. Alex Hales drops it. It wasn’t easy by any means, but he couldn’t hold on to it.
The pressure has been relieved a bit as Thirimanne pulls one over mid-wicket for a four. It was short from Finn and he has pulled it very well. It is Sri Lanka’s first boundary after seven overs. He then glides one to third-man and gets a couple. Mathews then gets a short ball and he pulls it for a four. Now 28 needed off 30 balls.
England building a bit of pressure here with a few quiet deliveries. For the first time in the game, the required rate has gone over a run-a-ball. Sri Lanka still have a relatively easy task on hand. The occasional boundary and the regular strike rotation will do for them.
Sangakkara is gone! The ball was short and wide from Chris Jordan and he cut it straight to Chris Woakes in the deep. What a way to get out! There was a hundred for the taking.
OUT! K Sangakkara 86(105)
Sri Lanka have the batting powerplay upon them, but they aren’t taking any undue risks. It is being done quite easily by knocking it around. Sangakkara continues to play those delightful strokes on the off-side. He then plays a fantastic upper cut. Woakes bowls it short and Sangakkara sways out of the way and merely glides it over the wicketkeeper’s head for a four. He then pulls for a single to get the 200.
Sangakkara is in complete control in the middle. The run-chase shouldn’t perturb the Sri Lankans. The required rate is under a run-a-ball so it isn’t a huge challenge.
Mahela Jayawardene is gone! He inside-edges one onto the stumps and timber! Chris Jordan celebrates. Sri Lanka need 100 off 112 balls.
OUT! M Jayawardene 44(50)
Sangakkara has got his fifty. That is his 90th ODI half-century as Sri Lanka complete 150. Jayawardene is also on 40.
Sri Lanka are in total control of the game here. The spinners are on and there isn’t much trouble for them.
Ravi Bopara has been brought into the attack and Jayawardene picks a boundary by sweeping him for a four. The two here are doing it quite well. Keeping Sri Lanka on course. There is a lot of calm inspired by them.
The proceedings are quite slow with the batsmen knocking it around for singles. England have got in Joe Root to help out Moeen Ali.
Perera is gone! He edged Moeen Ali and is taken at first slip. Big wicket for England.
OUT! K Perera 31(41)
England have brought on Moeen Ali into the attack here. Sangakkara and Perera continue to place it around the corner for a few singles.
The batsmen have quietly worked the ball around and picked a few singles. Sangakkara and Perera going slow and building a solid foundation. Finn pitches it short and Perera pulls it over mid-wicket for a four. Good shot. That is Sri Lanka’s 50.
Woakes has dismissed Dilshan. He goes for the pull and top edges it. It goes high in the air towards mid-off. Eoin Morgan runs back to take a well-judged catch. Kumar Sangakkara is the new man and he punches his second ball through mid-on for a four. What a beautifully timed stroke!
OUT! T Dilshan 16(21)
Dilshan and Kusal Pewrera begin the innings with flair. Any room outside the off-stump and they cart it through. Chris Woakes makes the error in the second over. Dilshan drives through cover for four and Perera carts one over point.
That is Morgan’s fifty! Morgan sweeps Dilshan and clears the boundary at long-on. A vital innings for both Morgan and England. He dances down the ground again and sends this one into the stands. What a shot! He swings for the third and nearly cleans up the non-striker. No run there. He then goes over cover and gets four for that. Handy runs for England. He plays the fifth through leg-side and gets a couple. He plays the last one in the air and it is taken by Sangakkara. England manage a decent 265. Morgan is gone off the last ball for a well-played 47-ball 62. The last over went for 18. We will be back for Sri Lanka’s chase in a while.
OUT! E Morgan 62(47)
Ajantha Mendis is in and he gets his third wicket. Jordan has played it to point. Steven Finn is the last man and he calmly defends the first ball. After a couple of dots, Finn gets a single through the deep. Morgan takes a single off the penultimate ball.
OUT! C Jordan 1(2)
Woakes is gone. He swings the bat across the line to Herath and has been bowled. Jordan comes in and takes a single first ball to get Morgan back on strike. Morgan then paddles one fine for a couple. He ends the over by sweeping him for a four.
OUT! C Woakes 6(9)
Woakes faces and gets a couple through the deep. He then plays Mendis down the ground for a single. Morgan follows that up with a single. Woakes then places another down the ground. Morgan edges the last ball and he gets three for it.
Morgan gets a six! He goes down on one knee and carts Dilshan over mid-wicket. That should help him a lot. Meanwhile, Chris Woakes is the new man in the middle and he gets a single first ball.
Mendis continues and he is keeping the pressure. Morgan is not able to enforce his dominance on the Sri Lankans here. England have been falling apart in the last seven-eight overs. Morgan finally gets a boundary when he hits Mendis down the ground for a four. Ben Stokes also gets a four as he pulls one through mid-wicket. He is out then! As he goes over the top on the leg-side and is caught by Perera in the deep.
OUT! B Stokes 6(6)
Buttler has lost his wicket. He charged down the ground to Herath and did not get all of it. He has offered a catch and Jayawardene has completed it.
OUT1 J Buttler 15(22)
Buttler and Morgan are working the strike around and picking singles. They have about eight overs to go and need impetus at the death to push England to a good score.
England’s most inventive batsmen are out in the middle. They have the task of putting up a very good score. Buttler manages a good six down the ground off Ajantha Mendis. It was way outside the off-stump and he went with the shot to clear the ground.
Dilshan gets Bopara! The ball stays low and he is bowled. Pressure on England.
OUT! R Bopara 22(31)
Taylor is gone! He has missed his ton here. Trying to go over the top off the spinner and he has spooned an easy catch in the ring on the off-side. Good innings comes to an end. Meanwhile, Eoin Morgan walks out.
OUT! J Taylor 90(109)
There was a comedy of errors here. A throw came in from the deep to Sangakkara but it was way over his head. It went towards the boundary, where Dhammika Prasad dived to stop it with his foot, but made contact with the ropes while doing so.
The one major factor in Taylor’s innings has been the way he has tried to hit it through the leg-side. on this occasion, he finally connects by charging down and sweeping. This is a four. Taylor has batted very well and he was beginning to cramp. Sri Lanka have enforced the slower bowlers and now they have two overs before the powerplay.
James Taylor gets one short from Thisara Perera and he pulls it for a four. He is holding the innings together and has played extremely well. Ravi Bopara is also batting very well.
Joe Root is gone. Rangana Herath is into the attack and Root tries to play through the off-side off the third ball and is bowled.
OUT! J Root 36(49)
There was an appeal for a caught behind off Taylor. However, the ball had missed the bat as it jammed into the ground. Taylor has had another brush of luck as he charges to Prasad and inside-edges one that has gone past the leg-stump for a four.
England are getting a move on. Taylor charges down the ground and smashed a six off Ajantha Mendis. Root follows as he smashes one over long-on off Jeevan Mendis. Taylor then carts one down the ground for a four. That has helped England with 25 runs from overs 20 and 21. Taylor has completed his first 50. It has been an important innings here for England. Both batsmen are running very well as they are placing the ball and running.
Jeevan Mendis has struck James Taylor on the pad and he has been given out. However, Taylor reviews and the replay shows that the ball has taken the inside edge.
Sri Lanka have introduced Jeevan Mendis into the attack. England have gone past 50 and these two batsmen are getting their eye in. Root has smashed one for a four through mid-wicket. This is England’s first boundary after 35 balls.
Thisara Perera gets some treatment from Taylor. That is why they speak so highly of him in England. Taylor danced down the ground and swatted it over long-on for a six. He then pulled one through square-leg for a four. Is Kevin Pietersen watching this?
Moeen Ali is gone now! Tillakaratne Dilshan is into the attack and off the second ball, Moeen tries to charge and misses. Sangakkara does the rest behind the stumps.
OUT! M Ali 19(20)
England are gradually rebuilding. Moeen has to play a big part here. In one of the overs, he picked 11 runs. James Taylor isn’t having a very good time as he has consumed a few deliveries. Taylor pushes one down the ground and calls Moeen for a single. There was a direct hit, but Taylor has made it.
Tough start for James taylor. Prasad gives him a few nervous moments. He had to play out a maiden over here.
Dhammika Prasad comes in and bowls a prodigiously swinging wide to start with. And the next ball fetches a wicket! It is outside the off-stump and Hales edges it while trying to drive. Mahela Jayawardene takes a catch at first slip.
OUT! A Hales 0(1)
Angelo Mathews has the new ball and he will begin against Moeen Ali. There is a change in England’s combination as Alastair Cook is out and James Taylor is in. Alex Hales has walked out to open the batting. Moeen gets things going by pulling a shortish ball over mid-wicket for four.

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s coverage of the fourth One-Day International (ODI) here. I am Nishad Pai Vaidya and I will be bringing updates of all the of the match.

Sri Lanka will clash with England in the fourth of the seven-match One-Day International (ODI) series at Colombo on Sunday. The hosts lead the series 2-1, but with England coming back strongly in the third game, the distance between the two sides will be markedly less.

A single win has upset the apple cart. Sri Lanka, one of the most successful sides of 2014, were expected to steamroll their opponents easily. But to England’s credit, they ran the Lankans close in the opening encounter thanks to a fantastic ton from Moeen Ali before finally pulling off a win in the third match.

What England’s victory will have done is boost their confidence and cause Sri Lanka to pull up their socks. Mahela Jayawardene’s absence — due to personal reasons — was conspicuous as the Lankan batsmen failed to make good on their starts. Whether he will feature in the fourth match remains to be seen.

For England, captain Alastair Cook’s one-match ban due to overrate might just be a blessing in disguise. Cook’s form in both ODIs and Tests has been far from ideal in the last couple of years, and the likes of Ian Botham and Kevin Pietersen have been calling for his head. With him sitting out, a more attacking batsman could take his place, and if all goes well for England, Cook will feel the heat. In his absence Eoin Morgan will lead the visitors.

Sri Lanka: Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kushal Janith Perera, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Lahiru Thirimanne, Angelo Mathews (c), Thilina Kandamby, Thisara Perera, Jeevan Mendis, Dhammika Prasad, Rangana Herath, Ajantha Mendis, Mahela Jayawardene.

England: Moeen Ali, Alex Hales, Joe Root, Ravi Bopara, Eoin Morgan (c), Jos Buttler (wk), Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Steven Finn, James Anderson, James Tradewell, Ian Bell, James Taylor, Harry Gurney.
