As ODI cricket made its first appearance of the new year, a slew of landmarks were achieved during  New Zealand’s innings against Sri Lanka at Bay Oval on Thursday.

Here is a list of the statistical milestones achieved so far in this ODI:

– The opener Martin Guptill surpassed Chris Cairns to sit behind only Brendon McCullum in the list of most sixes in ODIs for New Zealand.

– In his 157th innings, Guptill hit his 152nd six to move past former allrounder Cairns who hit 151 in 192 ODI innings for the Blackcaps. This milestone came in the same match in which the 32-year-old became the fifth New Zealand batsman to reach 6,000 runs in ODIs.

– In terms of innings, it took Guptill 157 to get to 6,000 runs which is faster than team-mate Taylor (166) needed. This makes the 32-year-old the joint eighth-fastest to the landmark alongside Dean Jones.

In terms of strike-rate in an innings, Neesham’s 361.53 is the second best for the Blackcaps after James Franklin’s 31* off eight balls against Canada during the 2011 World Cup, for a strike-rate of 387.50.

– During his berserk innings, Neesham hit five sixes in a 34-run over from Thisara Perera which is the joint third-most in ODI history and the best for New Zealand.

– Neesham thus joined AB de Villiers for the third most numbers of runs scored in an ODI, behind Herschelle Gibbs’ 36 against the Netherlands in the 2007 World Cup and Perera’s 35 against South Africa at Pallekele in 2013.

– New Zealand’s total of 371/7 in 50 overs slots in as their seventh best, one run behind the 372/6 they scored against Zimbabwe in 2012.

– This is the biggest total at Bay Oval, surpassing by some distance the 294/5 scored by New Zealand against Sri Lanka in January 2016.
