The contest between Vidarbha and Karnataka of the Round 5 of the Ranji Trophy 2016-17 which was being played at the Moti Bagh Stadium, Vadodara ended on Day Three as Karnataka ended up winning by 189 runs. Vidarbha were bundled out for just 111 while they were chasing a target of 301. Vinay Kumar was instrumental in bowling out Vidarbha as he got his 5-for and finished with the figures of 9.4-1-28 -5. Krishnappa Gowtham and Sreenath Arvind ended up getting two wickets while Stuart Binny got one. Winning the toss first Vidarbha chose to field as the wicket was expected to assist the bowlers from Day One. Karnataka scored 267 runs in their first innings as Lalit Kumar got 5 wickets and finished with the figures of 5-67. Gowtham was the top-scorer for his team in that innings with an unbeaten knock of 60 runs in the dying stage of the first innings. Vidarbha in their first innings could only manage to score 176 runs as Arvind got 3 wickets for 27 runs. Jitesh Sharma was the top scorer for his team with 61 runs but his efforts went futile as his team was bowled out for a low score and eventually handed a 91 runs lead to Karnataka in the second innings.

Karnataka with their 91 runs lead from the first innings got to a score of 209 as Ravikumar Samarth top-scored for his team with 47 runs. Shrikant Wagh picked up 4 wickets in the second innings giving away just 59 runs to stop the opposition team from posting a big total. Despite this effort, Vidarbha still had a steep task of getting to the target of 301 which they never looked like getting and were eventually bowled out for a puny total of 111. Jitesh Sharma and Shrikant Wagh were the only two batsmen from Vidarbha who got double digit scores. Sharma scored 68 runs from 78 balls while Wagh scored 13 from 20 deliveries and Vinay Kumar was eventually declared as Man of the Match for his total 7 wickets in the match.
