Ravi Shastri’s received support from former cricketers and teammates Dilip Vengsarkar and Madan Lal as the duo backed the current team director as a great prospect for a=India’s permanent coach. Shastri’s extension as India’s team director until ICC World T20 2016 has displayed the lack of clarity on the side of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) while it is clear that the body is just delaying a final call on the permanent head coach for the side. Along with Shahstri, the support staff comprising of B Arun, R Sridhar and Sanjay Bangar have also been handed an extension that raises a question if Shastri and Co are just filling in for the role until the advisory committee of Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly come up with a proper solution? According to Times of India, Vengsarkar, said, “I am all for the appointment of Indians as coaches. They have an eye on the `A’ teams and new talent emerging from the domestic circuit, while a foreigner only deals with players in the national team. Also, the players are comfortable as they may have dealt with prominent Indian coaches during their time on the domestic scene, and even if they haven’t, they will communicate better.”
Meanwhile, Lal added, “It’s good that Ravi Shastri has accepted the responsibility. He has knowledge and vision. Virat Kohli and Shastri also seem to be a compatible pair. Indians make good coaches. What has held back the appointment of Indian coaches are accusations of lobbying, parochialism and a lot of backbiting.” READ: Ravi Shastri: India will not change style of cricket against South Africa
A source closely associated with the body has revealed that the current bunch of coaches is hard working and prevents any kind of influence on the selection committee. “They have ended the image of favouritism and plagiarism which plagued some Indian coaches of the past,” the source added.
