Former Test spinner Akram Raza, who was recently arrested on charges of illegal betting, has said he will share the details of the police case against him with the PCB but only after the verdict of the court.
Raza, who is on the PCB’s elite umpires panel, was arrested by the Gulberg police early this month while cracking down on a gang of bookmakers, involved in illegal betting on the IPL matches.
The PCB director of domestic cricket Sultan Rana had sought clarification from Raza about the case.
“Raza told Rana that since the case was now in court, he would present his version to the board after the judge takes a decision on the case registered against him,” a well informed source said.
Meanwhile, Raza asserted that he has done no wrong.
“I have told the board that I am innocent. I was apprehended by the police in the Plaza even before I entered the room where the police supposedly busted the bookmakers racket,” Raza told PTI.
“I told the board that I had just gone to meet with an old friend who owns the plaza. I am confident of proving my innocence in court and once that is done then I will submit a detailed report on the incident to the Board,” he added.
Raza’s case is expected to come up for hearing in a week’s time.
Raza was fined by the Justice (retd) Malik Qayyum judicial commission in 2000 after an 18-month long inquiry into match-fixing allegations against some Pakistan players.
The former cricketer was fined for not co-operating with the commission.
