The completion of India tour of West Indies also marked an end to Sanjay Bangar’s five-year stint with the Indian cricket team, where he joined as batting coach in 2014 and got elevated to the post of assistant coach in 2017. While Bharat Arun and R Sridhar kept their jobs, Bangar was the only change to the staff that is set to be handed another two-year contract soon.

Bangar got to know about his fate two weeks back when the five-member selection committee chose Vikram Rathour as the top contender for the post. As per a report in The Times of India, Bangar was furious with the selectors’ decision and barged into the room of Devang Gandhi, a member of the selection committee who was with team India in West Indies.

“(When the selection committee was conducting interviews) … He went and knocked on Devang’s door late in the evening and gave him and the selection committee an earful. He warned the selectors that the team would rally around him and the decision (to replace him) would fall flat. It wasn’t required. It wasn’t the team’s job to decide on support staff. It was the selectors’ call,” sources told TOI.

Even before the start of the procedure, Bangar was the least favourite to retain his position due to team India’s failure to find a suitable number four batsman. Since 2015 World Cup, the team management tried many batsmen to fill the void. At World Cup 2019, backup opener KL Rahul performed the number 4 duties at the start. Later, Vijay Shankar came in when Rahul replaced Shikhar Dhawan at the top. After Shankar was ruled out of World Cup, Rishabh Pant batted at number four position in four matches that he played.

The report also added that team management wanted senior batsman MS Dhoni to be promoted to number four but Bangar never agreed to the idea.

After exiting from team India, Bangar is again expected to reunite with Indian skipper Virat Kohli at Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL. Rathour, Bangar’s replacement, will join team India before the home series against South Africa that starts on September 15.
