Fast bowler Shabnim Ismail’s five-wicket haul helped South Africa Women thrash Zimbabwe Women by 8 wickets with 230 balls to spare in the first match of the quadrangular series, which also features India and Ireland. Zimbabwe Women were bowled out for just 78 in 26.5 overs. Other than Shabnim’s effort, Raisibe Ntozakhe chipped in with three wickets to help South Africa dismantle Ireland. However, South Africa chased the target down the target in just 11.4 overs. Only two Zimbabwe players got past double figures. Skipper Sharne Mayers scored 24 off 29, while Josephine Nkomo remained unbeaten on 13 off 42. Full Updates: South Africa Women vs Zimbabwe Women Quadrangular Series, Match 1
Zimbabwe never had a good partnership going in the match. As a result, they found themselves bowled out for well under 100. After posting a low score, Zimbabwe never looked to be in the game. They did pick up a couple of wickets, but that was never going to be enough to restrict a strong South African line-up. Zimbabwe will next take on Ireland in the competition on Tuesday. They will look to put up a god show against the Irish team, who are short on confidence at the moment. Zimbabwe played a warm-up match against India prior to this tournament. They were handed a thrashing in that match as well.
Earlier, Zimbabwe had won the toss and elected to bat first. This will be a good practice for all the sides in this series ahead of the ICC Women’s World Cup, scheduled to be played in mid-June.
Brief Scores:
Zimbabwe Women 78 in 26.5 overs (Sharne Mayers 24, Josephine Nkomo 13*; Shabnim Ismail 5 for 25, Raisibe Ntozakhe 3 for 8) lost to South Africa Women 79 for 2 in 11.4 overs (Laura Wolvaardt 28, Trisha Chetty 25*; Nimatter Mutasa 1 for 27) by 8 wickets.
