Pakistan’s middle-order batsman Haris Sohail has been ruled out form the away Test series against South Africa. Sohail, who had to be dropped just before the toss on the Boxing Day Test after his knee flared up, made way for Shan Masood, who went on to score a fighting 120-ball 65 in Pakistan’s second innings on a day when the batsmen faltered. South Africa won the first Test by six wickets inside three days.

According to a report in Cricbuzz on Wednesday, Sohail was carrying the injury even before travelling to South Africa. He had been in good touch during the home series in which he scored two centuries against Australia and New Zealand. He ended the year as Pakistan’s top run-getter in Tests with 550 runs at an average of 39.28.

Sohail’s knee injury which has cropped up again denied him his international debut when Pakistan were touring South Africa in 2013. No replacement was announced as yet, but with just one Test to go after Thursday’s match at Newlands, Cape Town, it is unlikely that a batsman will be sent.
