Muttiah Muralitharan, the Sri Lankan legend believes his team has a good chance of winning the upcoming ICC World T20 2014. Sri Lanka recently won the Asia Cup in Bangladesh, breaking their long jinx in a tournament final.
Muralitharan bowed out of international cricket after Sri Lanka lost the 2011 World Cup final to India. In fact, Sri Lanka lost in the final at the 2007 World Cup, ICC World T20 2009 and the 2012 edition. The victory in the Asia Cup might as well help change that.
Speaking to the Indian Express, Muralitharan said, “They’ve (Sri Lanka) done well in these conditions. They’ve just returned home from Bangladesh after playing a bilateral series and the Asia Cup. They know the conditions inside out and have the belief after winning the Asia Cup.”
Muralitharan believes that Sri Lanka have a side that can win. “Most importantly, they’ve a team to win. They have wicket-taking options upfront, bowling at the death, spinners for middle overs and batters who know how to play when. There are other title contenders as well, but my pick is Sri Lanka.”
Sri Lanka recently clinched the Asia Cup with a comprehensive win over Pakistan in the final. They played two Tests and three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in Bangladesh leading up to the tournament and have set their mark there. And, more importantly, the likes of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Nuwan Kulasekara will return after injury lay-offs. That does bolster their chances.
